PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Emily Quintero pitched a shutout, and
Brooklyn Tapusoa drove in four runs as the Coppin State softball team completed a three-game MEAC series sweep of Maryland Eastern Shore with a 10-0 victory on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles moved to 5-17 overall and 4-8 in the MEAC while the Hawks fell to 9-27 on the year and 1-11 in league play.
A junior from Oceanside, Calif., Quintero allowed just two hits and a pair of walks while striking out three in her third career shutout. Quintero escaped a bases-loaded jam in the third unscathed and retired the last five batters she faced, including a strikeout to seal the win.
Tapusoa went 3-for-3 while finishing a double shy of the cycle and now has 12 home runs in her career.
Giselle Ulloa also homered and was one of three Eagles with two hits and joined
Yasmin Burrell with two RBI apiece.
Leslie Sereno also had a multi-hit game, and both her and Ulloa scored three runs apiece.
Coppin set the tone early on with five runs in the first as Tapusoa slugged a three-run home run, followed by a two-run double by Burrell. The Eagles also scored a run in each of the next two innings before scoring three more in the fourth. Ulloa connected for her first home run of the season, driving in Quintero, and
Natasha Arroyo drove in another with a single.
The Eagles return to action on April 11-12 for a three-game MEAC series against Norfolk State at CSU. Saturday's doubleheader is set for 1 pm, followed by a 12 pm single on Sunday.
