MEAC Announces Weekly Volleyball Honors, presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Va., Oct. 10, 2022Howard University junior outside hitter Jennifer Bolden was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Volleyball Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, the conference office announced today. Maryland Eastern Shore’s Nkemjika Ikemefuna was named Rookie of the Week and Coppin State senior Andrea Tsvetanova was named Setter of the Week, while Maryland Eastern Shore sophomore Charlize Williams earned Defensive Player of the Week honors.
 
Bolden (6-0, Jr., OH, Los Angeles, Calif.) hit a combined .559 in back-to-back victories over Morgan State and Coppin State this past weekend, helping the Bison hand the Eagles their first MEAC loss of the season. In 34 total swings, Bolden committed just two errors, racking up 21 kills to average three kills a set. She opened with nine kills on .500 hitting in a sweep of the Bears, and against the Eagles, she went error-free in 20 swings to record 12 kills.
 
Ikemefuna (5-11, Fr., OH, Richmond, Texas) averaged 3.2 kills per set and hit .297 across three matches this past week. She had 15 kills, four digs, two service aces and two blocks in Sunday’s win at North Carolina Central, hitting .313, and in Friday’s sweep of South Carolina State, she hit .750 for 10 kills and three digs. In a midweek contest against American, she had seven kills.
 
Tsvetanova (5-9, Sr., S, Sofia, Bulgaria) recorded double-doubles against both Norfolk State and Howard this past weekend. She opened with 32 assists and 10 digs against the Spartans, adding five service aces (including four straight to open the match), before turning in a 34-assist, 11-dig effort against the Bison. For the weekend, she averaged 9.4 assists and 3.0 digs per set.
 
Williams (5-11, So., MB, Mesquite, Texas) totaled seven blocks in three matches this past week, averaging 0.7 per set. She closed the week with four total blocks against North Carolina Central – helping the Hawks record their first win in Durham, N.C. since 2010 – and she had three more against South Carolina State. Williams also recorded a block in a midweek contest against American.
 
Other Top Performers
Hope Casel (Coppin State) had nine kills each against Norfolk State and Howard.
 
Ashley Roman (Coppin State) had 14 digs each against Norfolk State and Howard.
 
Jasmal Cruz (Delaware State) had 18 digs against South Carolina State and 14 against North Carolina Central.
 
Alondra Maldonado (Delaware State) had 10 kills and two blocks in a sweep of South Carolina State.
 
Kayla Diaz (Howard) had 49 assists, seven digs and two aces against Coppin State.
 
Rya McKinnon (Howard) hit .310 and had a team-high 13 kills against Coppin State.
 
Sydney McCree (Norfolk State) racked up 32 assists and four service aces against Morgan State, including three in a row to close out a set.
 
Shonte Seale (Norfolk State) had seven kills and hit .375 against Morgan State.
 
Kamren Harper (North Carolina Central) racked up 17 kills and six digs against Maryland Eastern Shore, hitting .429 for the match.
