NORFOLK, Va. – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) announced Tuesday evening the addition of women's flag football and women's golf as championship sports, expanding opportunities for female student-athletes throughout the conference.
Women’s flag football and women’s golf will both begin competition during the 2026-27 academic year, with conference championship events to follow the conclusion of their respective regular seasons.
"The addition of women's flag football and women's golf represents an exciting step forward for the MEAC and our member institutions," said MEAC Commissioner
Sonja Stills. "As we continue to create meaningful opportunities for student-athletes, these sports further strengthen our commitment to supporting the growth of women's athletics, while enhancing the championship experience across our conference."
As an NCAA Emerging Sport, the addition of women's flag football positions the sport to pursue NCAA championship status, with the potential to host its inaugural championship as early as spring 2028. The sport is also set to make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles, further highlighting its rapid growth and increasing global recognition.
Women’s golf provides an additional championship opportunity for female student-athletes and enhances the conference’s overall competitive offerings.
The new offerings increase the conference's championship portfolio to 16 sports. Championship formats and additional operational details will be announced at a later date.
