NORFOLK, Va – The No. 6 seed Coppin State Eagles scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to rally past the No. 4 seed Morgan State Bears 4-3 on Friday afternoon at TowneBank Field in an elimination game at the 2026 MEAC Softball Championship.
Morgan State built a 3-0 advantage through the middle innings before Coppin State’s late comeback. The Bears scored their first run in the third when Millie Cousins reached on a throwing error that allowed Nia Lewis to score. Morgan State added another run in the fourth on Gianna Ettore’s RBI groundout before extending the lead to 3-0 in the fifth.
Coppin State was limited to just one hit through the first six innings by Morgan State starter Millie Cousins before erupting in the seventh. Giselle Ulloa opened the inning after being hit by a pitch, and the Eagles capitalized on defensive miscues to begin the comeback. Natasha Arroyo and Xzylia Maravilla each drew bases-loaded walks to plate runs before Brooklyn Lee-Scott delivered an RBI single up the middle to tie the game at 3-3. Cameran Corbett then reached on a fielder’s choice as another Morgan State error allowed the go-ahead run to score.
Morgan State put the tying run on second base in the bottom of the seventh, but Coppin State pitcher Debra Hyde induced a game-ending groundout to secure the victory. Hyde earned the complete-game win, improving to 3-7 after allowing three runs — only one earned — on seven hits. Cousins was charged with the loss despite allowing just one hit through 6.1 innings.
Coppin State managed just two hits in the contest, with Lee-Scott and Corbett recording the team’s lone hits and RBI knocks. Arroyo, Maravilla and Corbett each drove in a run during the decisive seventh inning.
With the win, Coppin State Eagles advanced to face No. 2 Delaware State Hornets in the 8:00 p.m. elimination matchup, while Morgan State Bears was eliminated from the tournament.
