RALEIGH, N.C. – Coppin State's
Solomon Hammond won the 100m dash at the Raleigh Relays, hosted by NC State at its Paul Derr Track & Field Facility over the weekend.
A senior from Ghana, Hammond bested a field of 102 runners with a time of 10.21 which currently leads the MEAC and ranks 11
th nationally. Hammond also finished seventh in the 200m dash in 20.97 out of lane eight, good for another league-leading time. He also ran the second leg of the 4x100m Relay that finished in 40.48 alongside
Cole Schlotterbeck,
Timothy Frederick and
Chris Adekoya.
Schlotterbeck posted a personal record of 10.53 in the 100m dash along with a 21.58 in the 200m dash while Frederick led a quartet of Eagles in the 400m dash with a time of 47.22. Following him was
Damien Howard (47.67),
Etiam Torgbenu (48.19) and
Philip Gray (48.68). The quartet also combined to run a 3:14.56 in the 4x400m Relay to close the meet.
Torgbenu doubled up in the 800m and clocked an impressive time of 1:53.98, just behind teammate
Asa Francis who covered the two laps in 1:52.42.
The reigning MEAC Field Athlete of the Week, freshman
Elijah Williams doubled up once again, battling a headwind to a time of 14.62 in the 110m hurdles while clearing 1.91m (6' 3.25") in the high jump. His classmate
Sean Williams also performed well in the high jump with a leap of 2.01m (6' 7").
Alexander Dobson Honablue led the way for the Eagle sin the triple jump, leaping 14.39m (47' 2.5") while
Keyon Jackson covered 13.32m (43' 8.5") in the event.
On the women's side,
Gifty Oku led the way with a 12.17 in the 100m along with a 24.71 in the 200m dash.
Kyah La Fortune followed shortly after with a 24.84 in the 200m dash while doubling in the 400m (58.36), just behind
Benidicta Kwartemaa in 57.55.
The trio along with
Zeana Bain also competed in the 4x100m Relay and took 12
th of 35 teams in 46.83.
Also, competing was
Ariell Thomas who clocked a 15.56 in the 100m hurdles.
Coppin also sent a contingent to the Seahawk Invitational at St. Mary's (Md.).
Danielle Wooten won the 400m dash in 59.14, followed by
Chase Cineas in fifth in a time of 1:02.54.
Paula Orusede also medaled, taking second in the 100m hurdles in 16.14.
Four Eagles took fourth in their respective events:
Dream Wilson in the 10m dash (13.79),
Indya Norman in the long jump (4.67m / 15' 4"), and
Blair Griffith in both the shot put (9.62m / 31' 6.75") and discus (27.00m / 88' 7"). Following Griffith in the shot put were
Anttonise Codner (8.67m / 28' 5.5") and Wilson (7.75m / 25' 5.25").
CSU returns to the track on April 3-4 at George Mason University's Dalton Ebanks Invitational.
