NEW YORK, N.Y. --- For the second consecutive season, the Norfolk State men's track and field team captured the HBCU Showcase on Saturday evening.
The Spartans totaled 119.5 points to secure the team title. Virginia Union finished second with 77.5 points, followed by Howard (70), Coppin State (57), and Prairie View A&M (47).
Shamar Heard led Norfolk State on the track, winning the 400 meters in 48.54 seconds. Kendrick Winfield placed fourth (49.20), while Lavontay Bond finished seventh (49.40). Jaymes Saunders added a runner-up finish in the 60-meter hurdles, crossing the line in 7.93 seconds.
Norfolk State recorded three top-five finishes in the 3,000 meters. Daniel Mathenge placed second with a time of 8:33.14, Lewis Too finished third in 8:38.56, and Mathew Kipkoech took fifth in 8:39.80.
In the mile, Jemmel Green earned a bronze medal after clocking 4:18.80. Mathenge followed in fourth place (4:20.11), while Basil Koech rounded out the Spartans' finishers, placing 11th in 4:41.07.
Christopher Basking paced Norfolk State in the 200 meters, finishing eighth in 22.03 seconds, with Julian Ward close behind in 11th (22.07). The Spartans also secured a pair of top-six finishes in the 60 meters, as Smith placed fifth in 6.88 seconds and Basking finished sixth in 6.90. Nimporembere Drogba added a seventh-place finish in the 800 meters with a time of 1:57.85.
Norfolk State also impressed in the field events. Saunders won the long jump with a leap of 7.52 meters, while Atrell Williams claimed gold in the shot put with a throw of 16.14 meters. Kristopher Stephens added another first-place finish for the Spartans, winning the triple jump with a mark of 15.12 meters.
Landon Walker earned a podium finish in the pole vault, clearing 4.30 meters to place third. Christian White followed in fourth at 3.85 meters. Jayden Gordon posted a pair of solid performances, placing sixth in the long jump (6.76 meters) and eighth in the triple jump (14.07 meters).
Saunders also led the Spartans in the high jump, finishing fourth after clearing 1.96 meters. Chazden Wilson (seventh), Xavier McGreal (eighth), and
Cancelor Watson (11th) each cleared 1.91 meters.
Norfolk State returns to action Friday, Jan. 30, at the Penn State National Open.
