NORFOLK, Va., March 20, 2025 - North Carolina A&T State swept the major awards at the 2025 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference’s (MEAC) Bowling awards Thursday night.
Maya Avilez was named the MEAC Player of the Year, while teammate
Victorya White garnered the Rookie of the Year honors. Head Coach
Kim Terrell-Kearney was named the MEAC Coach of the Year for the fifth consecutive year.
All awards were voted on by the conference’s head coaches and sports information directors.
Avilez defended her Preseason MEAC Player of the Year title by claiming the MEAC Player of the Year honor after leading the league in individual frame fill percentage both overall (87.7%) and in baker format (87.0%). She ranks second in the MEAC in traditional format fill percentage (88.6%), strike percentage (51.5%) and first ball percentage (76.2%). She has garnered three MEAC Player of the Week honors this season while accumulating a league leading 74.5 spare conversion percentage. Avilez also collected her second consecutive MEAC First-Team All-Conference accolade.
White becomes the third Rookie of the Year honoree for North Carolina A&T with the last award going to Ana Olaya in 2018. She ranks first in the MEAC in individual scoring average with a 20.68 average per frame and first in baker format scoring per frame at 20.49. White holds the highest overall strike percentage at 53.2% as well as the highest strike percentage in traditional format of 56.0%. She also leads the MEAC in individual first ball percentage overall (77.1%) and in traditional format (77.9&) as well as the best individual first ball average pinfall overall (9.14) and in traditional format (9.19). White garnered MEAC Rookie of the Week honors three times while collecting Player of the Week honors twice.
Terrell-Kearney collected her fifth consecutive Coach of the Year honor, and sixth overall, after leading her team to its fifth regular season champion title. The Aggies accumulated an overall record of 80-36, 12-2 in MEAC, with premier wins over top-ranked opponents to include No. 9 Stephen F. Austin, No. 7 Sam Houston State, No. 6 Arkansas State and No. 2 Jacksonville State most recently. The Aggies lead the MEAC in nearly every statistical category boasting the highest overall team scoring average of 20.206 pins per frame as well as the best team fill percentage of 85.67%. N.C. A&T State has a conference best 49.70% team strike percentage and a 71.50% team spare percentage. Coach Terrell-Kearney's team enters the MEAC Bowling Championship as the No. 1 seed and will face No. 8 Norfolk State in the first match of the weekend.
Joining Avilez and White on the MEAC First-Team All-Conference are fellow Aggies Chloe Newberry and Laura Garcia, as well as Alabama – Birmingham's Madison Colston.
MEAC Bowling Championship action begins Friday, March 21, at 9 AM at the Buffaloe Lanes North in Raleigh, N.C.
