DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University's student-athletes volunteered a total of 12,266.3 hours towards community engagement for the 2023-24 academic year.
With Eagle Pride, a total of 256 student-athlete volunteers accumulated 1,037.5 hours of service in the summer semester of 2023, 4,619.31 hours during the 2023 fall semester, and 6,609.49 hours in the 2024 spring semester.
NCCU student-athletes completed the majority of those 12,266.3 service hours over the past 12 months through events sourced by the Department of Athletics (6,506 hours), including sport-sponsored hours and NCCU WINGS initiated hours. The remainder of the hours were achieved through opportunities by student-athletes themselves, including unpaid internship hours and service learning.
Every sports team represented NCCU with community service with football (5,005.81), cheer (2,478) and softball (1,692.5) providing the most hours in 2023-24.
The top volunteer sites for the Eagles this past year were NCCU Campus Community Garden, NCCU Campus Pantry and Shepard Middle School.
Identified as a Community Engaged Institution by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, the NCCU community lives by the institution's motto of 'Truth and Service.'
