The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) will celebrate Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month, highlighting the history, culture and contributions of the Hispanic and Latino community.
National Hispanic Heritage Month, observed from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, honors the histories, cultures and contributions of individuals with ancestral ties to Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
Sept. 15 marks the independence anniversaries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18, respectively. Oct. 12, Día de la Raza, is also observed during the month in several Latin American countries.
“Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the diverse cultures, identities and stories that strengthen our MEAC community,” said MEAC Commissioner Sonja Stills. “Our student-athletes bring unique backgrounds and experiences to competition, the classroom and their communities, and those perspectives are an important part of what makes our conference so special. We are proud to celebrate their accomplishments, honor their heritage and recognize the many individuals who continue to make a meaningful impact across the MEAC.”
The MEAC’s Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month initiatives will spotlight student-athletes from Hispanic and Latin American countries across its eight member institutions through a variety of campaigns and activations.
