Former MEAC POTY Paige Selected by St. Louis Cardinals in 2023 MLB Draft

SEATTLE, Wash. -- Recently graduated Delaware State infielder Trey Paige, a former Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Player of the Year, was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals with the 515th pick of the 17th round in the 2023 Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft.

The 2022 MEAC Player of the Year became just the eighth player in program history and seventh under current head coach JP Blandin to have been drafted by an MLB organization.

A Delaware State standout who already has his name inserted into seven career categories, Paige has put himself in the top five of one more Hornet Baseball category. With his selection, he becomes the second-highest MLB Draft selection in program history. As for his career category standings, Paige is third out right in home runs (32) as well as walks (105) and is tied for third in doubles (46), fourth in runs scored (147) and tied for fifth in total at-bats with 545.

His 203 total hits rank him seventh, while his 136 RBIs put him in sixth.

"Our Hornet family is excited for Trey. 'Cap' has put in the work and now he gets the opportunity he deserves," Blandin said. "I am very grateful that the Cardinals drafted him as we have some former assistant coaches in that organization and all told, it will be a perfect fit for him. He will make a great professional baseball player and we all wish him the best."

Paige joins Pedro Swann (Atlanta Braves; 26th round of the 1991 MLB Draft), Tim Vaillancourt (Arizona Diamondbacks; 31st round of the 2003 MLB Draft), Scott Martin (Chicago White Sox; 34th round of the 2003 MLB Draft), Shawn Phillips (Texas Rangers; 20th round of the 2004 MLB Draft), Eric Carter (Seattle Mariners; 10th round of the 2004 MLB Draft), Dan Perkins (Colorado Rockies; 27th round of the 2009 MLB Draft) and Garrett Lawson (Los Angeles Angels; 19th round of the 2019 MLB Draft) on the list of Delaware State's MLB Draft picks.
