Morgan State Wins 2023 MEAC Esports Championship

NORFOLK, Va., May 17, 2023 – Morgan State won the 2023 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Esports Championship, which was held on March 8-9 at the Norfolk Scope Arena in Norfolk, Va., in conjunction with the 2023 MEAC Basketball Tournament.
 
Achieving the vision of MEAC Commissioner Sonja Stills’ vision for MEAC Esports, this marked the inaugural in-person MEAC Esports Championship. Charity Phillips and BU Gamerz were instrumental in assisting the successful tournament, as well as MEAC Assistant Commissioner for External Affairs Cesley Tafoya and Director of Administrative Services and Esports Coordinator Ohin Gaston.

The MEAC hosted several esports teams, including Howard University, Morgan State, Norfolk State, Maryland Eastern Shore, North Carolina Central and Florida A&M. Featured games included Rocket LeagueSuper Smash Bros. UltimateOverwatch and Mario Kart.

Morgan State was named the overall winner after all points from all games were tallied, while second place went to Howard University and Norfolk State came in third. The Bears won individual game titles in Overwatch 2 and Mario Kart, while Howard claimed the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate championship.
 
That title gave the Bison an automatic bid to May’s Collegiate Esports Commissioners Cup (CECC).
 
Maryland Eastern Shore won the MEAC title in Rocket League.
 
The event was broadcast through the MEAC's Twitch platform and was shoutcasted by several casters: most notably Lemonkiwi. Several reporters and podcasters, who were at the tournament for basketball, took an interest in the Epsorts Tournament.
 
Notably, Dr. Kenyatta Cavil of Inside the HBCU Sports Lab held his live podcast from the tournament with the esports broadcast shown behind him.

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) is in its 52nd year of intercollegiate competition with the 2022-23 academic school year.
