North Carolina A&T State Advances to Final of 2023 MEAC Bowling Championship

Bracket

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.,
March 25, 2023 – North Carolina A&T State advanced to the championship final of the 2023 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Bowling Championship on Saturday at Pinboy’s at the Beach with a 2-1 Mega Match win over Monmouth.

Monmouth, the No. 3 seed, opened by taking the traditional round over the two-time defending MEAC champion, 951-867, thanks in large part to a 208 from Second Team All-MEAC selection Jamie Phelan and a 202 from Siyah Sweeny (Skylar Smith nearly joined the 200 club, bowling a 198).

But the Aggies bounced back in the Baker total pinfall round, withstanding a late Hawks push to take that round 969-957. North Carolina A&T State opened 196-178, 233-190 and 201-173 before Monmouth went 193-157 and 223-182 to make it interesting.

In Baker best-of-seven, the Aggies asserted control and won each of the first four games – including a closing flourish in the fourth game in which Lauren Tomaszewski, a First Team All-MEAC selection, struck three times in the final frame to clinch the match.

NCAT, ranked No. 7 nationally, is in search of its third straight MEAC title and eighth overall.

UAB posted the upset of the morning, defeating No. 2 seed Maryland Eastern Shore 2-0 in Mega Match. The fourth-seeded Blazers opened with an 856-752 victory in traditional team play, thanks to a 216 from Third Team All-MEAC honoree Jamie Krasginor and a 210 from Keagan Trexler.

That momentum carried into Baker total pinfall, which UAB opened by winning the first game 211-138. UMES rebounded with a 232-190 win in the second game, before the Blazers answered in the third game, 210-160.

The format closed out 123-158 and 176-151, giving UAB the 910-839 win and eliminating the Hawks.

Coppin State had an equally impressive morning, as the No. 6 seed Eagles eliminated Morgan State 2-0. Coppin won the traditional format 999-837, with Elizabeth Stokley leading the way with a 255. Jalyne Myers was also strong for the Eagles, rolling a 214.

In Baker total pinfall, the Eagles were even stronger. They won the first game 263-224, taking momentum by opening the game with eight straight strikes. They followed that up with a 223-146, then took the match 1,003-961 after games three through five went 163-201, 205-176 and 149-194.

The afternoon session’s elimination match was one of drama; Coppin State took the traditional round from UAB in the afternoon elimination match, winning 887-865 after Myers led the way with a 204 and Xiani Carpenter added a 201. Krasnigor led the Blazers with a 231 and Madelynn Oliva added a 217.

The Blazers rebounded in Baker total pinfall, squeaking past 820-800 (204-177, 169-173, 134-134, 165-155, 148-161) to force the best-of-seven round.

UAB then took Baker best-of-seven four games to one – winning 225-172, 166-171, 152-142, 216-203, 198-139 – to eliminate the Eagles and advance to Sunday morning.

The final day of the 2023 MEAC Bowling Championship will begin at 9 a.m. with the elimination bracket final between Monmouth and UAB, with the winner advancing to the championship match. Sunday’s championship match will be at 2 p.m. and will re-air on ESPNU on Monday, April 3 at 6 p.m.
