MEAC Completes Day 1 of 2023 Bowling Championship

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.,
March 24, 2023 – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) completed the first day of the 2023 Bowling Championship on Friday at Pinboy’s at the Beach, with eight of the league’s nine bowling programs in action.
 
The morning session saw all four Mega Matches end in 2-0 sweeps, with each of the top three seeds moving on in the winner’s bracket. North Carolina A&T State, the top seed and two-time defending champion, took care of Howard after winning the traditional game 825-817 and the Baker total pinfall segment 950-678.
 
In traditional play, First Team All-MEAC honoree Lauren Tomaszewski led the Aggies with a 191, while Howard’s Sydney Allison had the high game of the match with a 210.
 
In Baker, the Aggies took immediate control by winning the first game 225-144, before following that with scores of 192-128, 169-142, 168-113 and 196-151.
 
No. 2 seed Maryland Eastern Shore defeated Norfolk State, the No. 7 seed, 2-0. The Hawks opened with an 876-842 win in the traditional game, with Mariana Santos leading the way with a 205. Megan Wheat had the Spartans’ best individual game with a 196.
 
In Baker total pinfall, UMES won 806-782 (176-156, 153-166, 160-165, 167-143, 150-152).
 
Monmouth, the No. 3 seed, took care of No. 6 Coppin State after winning 931-851 in the traditional match. The Hawks had two bowlers break 200; Skylar Smith bowled a 203 and Jamie Phelan, a Second Team All-MEAC honoree, added 202.
 
Temira White led Coppin State with a 192.
 
Monmouth then won the Baker total pinfall segment 959-760 after opening with games of 192-124 and 210-193. Coppin took the third game 171-161, but Monmouth closed out the fourth and fifth games, 195-134 and 201-138.
 
Morgan State defeated UAB in the morning session 2-0, starting with a 937-793 win in the traditional game. Cheyenne Washington, a Second Team All-MEAC honoree, had the morning’s high game with a 238, and Aliya Adams bowled a 204 for the Bears.
 
In Baker total pinfall, the Bears won 939-864 (170-180, 200-148, 171-199, 208-166, 190-171).
 
UAB, the No. 5 seed, bounced back in the afternoon session with a 2-0 win over Howard, eliminating the Bison. The Blazers won the traditional match 878-749, thanks in large part to a 206 from Shauna Rodgers. Then, in Baker total pinfall, UAB won 924-698 (186-151, 157-151, 216-124, 195-156, 170-116).
 
Coppin State eliminated Norfolk State with a 2-0 Mega Match win in the afternoon. The Eagles opened with a 1,018-832 win in traditional format – the only team to eclipse 1,000 pins in that format for the day – and three Coppin bowlers broke the 200-pin mark.
 
Kaylah Castillo and Logan Brown, both of whom were named Third Team All-MEAC, bowled 237 and 215, respectively, while Elizabeth Sotkley added a 201.
 
Wheat rolled a 263 for the Spartans, the high of the day.
 
In the winner’s bracket, both afternoon matches went to the Baker best-of-seven format. Morgan State beat North Carolina A&T State 899-856 in the traditional round, with Carrington Beaman leading the Bears with a 210, before the Aggies rebounded to win the Baker total pinfall round 1,028-926 (223-162, 190-207, 201-166, 169-206, 245-185).
 
Melanie Katen, the MEAC Bowler of the Year, rolled a 214 in the traditional round.
 
The Aggies then dominated in Baker best-of-seven play, sweeping Morgan State 4-0 (203-168, 216-197, 189-140, 243-178) to take the match and avoid falling into the elimination bracket.
 
Maryland Eastern Shore opened with a 913-809 traditional win over Monmouth, where Santos bowled a 225, before Monmouth bounced back to barely take the Baker total pinfall 969-959 (202-228, 183-184, 222-168, 190-184, 172-195).
 
Monmouth then took the Baker best-of-seven format, winning four games to one (186-160, 194-192, 201-182, 213-252, 204-174).
 
Saturday’s action begins at 9 a.m. with a pair of elimination matches: UAB against Maryland Eastern Shore and Coppin State against Morgan State. The winner’s bracket final, North Carolina A&T State versus Monmouth, and one more elimination match get underway at 2 p.m.
