COLUMBIA, Md. -- The Delaware State baseball team swept the first-place Coppin State Eagles in a seven-inning doubleheader on Sunday by scores of 7-0 and 12-4.
Catcher Robert Trujillo got the Hornets on the board early in game one with an RBI single in to left field that brought home Alan Alonso for a 1-0 Delaware State lead in the top of the second inning.
Trujillo doubled the Hornet lead in the top of the fourth with his second-straight RBI single to kick off what would be a four-run inning. Evan Harris got in on the action with an RBI-single of his own that brought home Alonso, extending the lead to 3-0. Miguel Rivera drove in two of his own by way of a single that allowed Harris and Trujillo to score for a 5-0 advantage through four frames.
Delaware State added two runs of insurance in the fifth inning. Alonso belted a triple to the gap in right center that brough home Brady Daniels. Alec Rodriguez chipped in with an extra base hit via an RBI double to left center that scored Alonso from third for a 7-0 game through five complete innings.
On the mound, Peter Carreca collected his third win of the season after four innings of shutout baseball. He allowed only four walks and two hits while striking out three. Mike Carrington picked up his first save of the year after coming on in relief for Delaware State. Carrington threw three innings of shutout ball only allowing one hit and struck out four.
Game one's shutout victory was the third of the season for the Hornets and the first since Delaware State defeated University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) 2-0 back on April 9.
Rivera and Trujillo led the offense with a pair of RBIs. Alonso, Daniels, Trujillo and Krew Bouldin all tallied a multi-hit game with two hits each.
After being blanked in the hit column in game one, Trey Paige got the scoring started for Delaware State with his league-leading 11th home run in his very first at-bat of the night cap. A solo shot from the sophomore shortstop gave the Hornets a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
The Hornets exploded for seven runs in the third inning that would prove to power the game two win and secure the Sunday sweep.
Paige got things going in the big inning with a double down the left field line that scored Mike Worthington, putting the game at 2-0. A few batters later, Daniels reached on a Coppin State error and the error would allow Paige to cross home plate for a 3-0 lead. Alonso added two more for Delaware State with a two-run home run over the right field wall, pushing the contest to 5-0. Evan Harris caused another Eagles error that got him on base and Rodriguez to score for a 6-0 game. Worthington added two more by way of a two-RBI single back up the middle for an 8-0 lead through three complete innings.
The Hornets added four more runs of insurance by stringing back-to-back two-run frames in the sixth and seventh innings.
Coppin State got one run back in the bottom of the seventh but an eight run deficit would be as close to the lead as closer C.J. Loper would allow who shut the door on a possible comeback and preserved the win for the Hornets.
As a team, Delaware State tallied 15 hits in game two with five Hornets having a multi-hit game led by Paige who had three. Alonso, Daniels, Rodriguez and Worthington all recorded two each. Alonso, Paige, Rodriguez and Worthington also drove in two runs apiece.
On the mound, Ethan Edelson recorded his first win of the season after throwing 2.1 innings in relief duty. During his outing, he only allowed two hits and two walks and suffered just one earned run.
