Box Score

NORFOLK, Va., May 19, 2022
– Krew Bouldin’s RBI single down the right field line in the bottom of the 10th gave Delaware State a 7-6 walkoff win over Norfolk State on Thursday to open the 2022 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Championship at Marty L. Miller Field.

Top-seeded Delaware State advances to Friday’s 12 p.m. game against the winner of Thursday’s contest between Coppin State and Maryland Eastern Shore. That game will be streamed live for free on HBCUGo.tv.

Norfolk State, the No. 4 seed, falls into the elimination bracket, where it will face the loser of the Coppin State-UMES game at 3:30 p.m.

Mike Worthington walked with one out in the 10th and advanced to second after MEAC Player of the Year Trey Paige was intentionally walked. That set the stage for Bouldin, who roped a fly ball down the right field line to score Worthington and trigger the celebration.

The Hornets (23-21) led 6-4 heading into the ninth inning, but the Spartans rallied after walks to Malcolm Perry and Brandon Cleveland, as well as Raphy Rodriguez reaching on a fielder’s choice. An RBI groundout from Dionte Brown scored a run, then Jacob Council singled to right field to bring home Rodriguez and tie the game at 6-6.

The Hornets got on the board first in the bottom of the opening frame. Miguel Rivera reached on an error to lead off the inning, then later scored on a passed ball to put Delaware State up 1-0. The Spartans answered in the top of the second, scoring twice to take a 2-1 lead after Council hit his fourth home run of the season and Kam Walker singled home a run.

Alan Alonso tied the game with an RBI triple in the third, then the Hornets pushed across three runs in the fourth, taking a 5-2 lead on RBI singles from Miguel Rivera and Bouldin, as well as a bases-loaded walk to Alonso.

Norfolk State (15-31), the No. 4 seed and defending champion, scored twice in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 5-4. Rodriguez singled in a run before Tommy Woods was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

An error in the bottom of the sixth put the Hornets up 6-4.

Bouldin was 4-for-6 at the plate with two RBIs, while Paige was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and three walks.
