Norfolk State Set to Host 2022 MEAC Baseball Championship

Bracket

NORFOLK, Va., May 16, 2022
– Norfolk State will host the 2022 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Championship on Thursday through Saturday at Marty L. Miller Field. Delaware State will come into the tournament as the No. 1 seed.

The Hornets have won their last five games, including sweeps of Coppin State and Maryland Eastern Shore in the final two weekends of the regular season. Delaware State went 19-14 (.576) in MEAC play, edging Coppin State (17-13, .567) in conference winning percentage.

This is Delaware State’s first regular-season title since the Hornets won the Northern Division in 2014.

Maryland Eastern Shore (15-18, .455), competing this year after opting out of the 2021 season, will be the No. 3 seed, while defending champion and tournament host Norfolk State (12-18, .400) will be the No. 4 seed.

The tournament will be contested in a double-elimination format. Thursday’s action will begin at 12 p.m., when top seed Delaware State takes on No. 4 seed Norfolk State. The 3:30 p.m. game will see No. 2 seed Coppin State square off against No. 3 seed Maryland Eastern Shore.

There will be three games on Friday, starting at 12 p.m. with a game between Thursday’s two winners. The winner of that game will advance straight to Saturday’s championship game. The 3:30 p.m. contest on Friday will be an elimination tilt between the losers of Thursday’s games, and the 7 p.m. game will pit the winner of the 3:30 game against the loser of the 12 p.m. game in another elimination contest.

Saturday’s championship game will start at 12 p.m. If the team emerging from the loser’s bracket wins that game, the two teams will play again. If the team from the winner’s bracket wins, the championship is over.

Norfolk State won the 2021 championship in extra-inning, walkoff fashion over North Carolina Central, the Spartans’ first-ever title. Coppin State is in search of its first MEAC baseball title since 1995, while Delaware State is looking for its first championship since 1989.

Maryland Eastern Shore is in search of its first-ever MEAC baseball title.

Friday’s games will be streamed live for free on HBCUGo. Saturday’s championship game(s) will be streamed live, for free, both on HBCUGo and on the MEAC Digital Network on YouTube.
