MEAC Announces Weekly Baseball Honors, presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Va., April 18, 2022Delaware State sophomore infielder Trey Paige was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, the conference office announced today. Coppin State pitcher Marcos Herrand was named Rookie of the Week, while Maryland Eastern Shore junior Noah Covington earned Pitcher of the Week honors.
 
Paige (6-0, So., INF, Reading, Pa.) batted .533 (8-for-15) in the Hornets’ four-game series against Norfolk State, leading Delaware State to the series win. Five of Paige’s eight hits in the series were for extra bases – he hit two doubles, a triple and two home runs. The MEAC’s home run leader drove in five runs, scored seven times himself and walked three times for an on-base percentage of .611. Paige slugged 1.200 for the week and had three multi-hit games – including a 3-for-5 effort with four runs and three RBIs on Thursday.
 
Herrand (5-11, Fr., P, Brandon, Fla.) needed just 76 pitches in a seven-inning, complete-game shutout win over Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday. He scattered three hits on the afternoon and struck out three without surrendering a walk.
 
Covington (6-2, Jr., P, Seaford, Del.) threw his fifth complete game of the season (an NCAA Div. I best) against Coppin State, scattering four hits and not giving up an earned run. He struck out a career-high eight batters and didn’t surrender a walk.
 
Other Top Performers
Jordan Hamberg (Coppin State) hit .412 in the Maryland Eastern Shore series, including a 3-for-4 effort with a double and a home run in the first game of Friday’s doubleheader.
 
Evan Harris (Delaware State) struck out eight in six innings of work against Norfolk State, giving up just one hit and one earned run.
 
Jacob Council (Norfolk State) had four multi-hit efforts in five games, including a 3-for-4 performance with three RBIs in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader against Delaware State.
 
Steven Shaffer (Norfolk State) was 3-for-4 with a career-high four RBIs in a midweek game against Richmond.
