LUBBOCK, Texas – Coppin State's Josh Hankins has been named to the College Baseball Foundation's 2022 Brooks Wallace Award Watch List. The award, sponsored by Mizuno, honors the nation's top shortstop and will be presented this summer. It is named for the former Texas Tech shortstop who played for the Red Raiders from 1977-80.
A slick-fielding freshman from Boothwyn, Pa., Hankins is one of two MEAC players to be on the Watch List and one of just six freshmen. Hankins has received three MEAC Rookie of the Week awards and one Player of the Week honor already this season and is hitting .294 with five doubles and 15 RBIs, while stealing 12 bases.
Hankins has solidified the Eagles' defense up the middle with a .969 fielding percentage while leading the MEAC with 73 assists. Among qualified players, Hankins ranks 10th in the MEAC in batting average, third in runs scored (25), sixth in hits (32) and tied for second in stolen bases.
The Eagles (13-20 overall) are currently in first place in the MEAC standings with a 9-7 record.
