VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., March 25, 2022 – The 2022 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Bowling Championship continued on Friday at Pinboy’s at the Beach, with North Carolina A&T State and Maryland Eastern Shore still alive in the winner’s bracket.
Top seed North Carolina A&T State, the defending champion, opened with a 2-0 Mega Match win over Howard. The Aggies took the traditional round 1,010-832 and saw Lauren Tomaszewski (233), Pamela Warr (223) and Lauren Garcia (200) all top 200 – before winning Baker total pinfall 1,051-816 (223-165, 213-217, 200-171, 235-171, 180-182).
The Aggies then faced Monmouth in the afternoon, with the Hawks taking the traditional round 971-935 to open the proceedings. Saige Yamada was the star of that round, bowling a tournament-best 269 with 10 strikes (including eight in a row) and two spares.
North Carolina A&T State bounced back, though, taking the Baker total pinfall round 1,098-943 (212-213, 212-201, 214-172, 237-134, 223-223) to force the Baker best-of-seven round. After two games, the Aggies and Hawks found themselves tied, with NCAT taking game one 259-234 and Monmouth game two at 230-210.
But the Aggies closed out 221-220, 222-191 and 203-170 to send Monmouth to the elimination bracket.
Maryland Eastern Shore, which entered as the No. 3 seed, defeated UAB in the morning session. The Hawks won 1,013-932 in the traditional round – led by a 238 from Diana Ochoa – before taking the Baker total pinfall round 1,046-861 (188-133, 258-186, 181-169, 204-181, 215-192).
The Hawks followed in the afternoon with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Delaware State, the No. 2 seed. Third-seeded Maryland Eastern Shore took the traditional round 1,073-920 with Elizabeth Ross (245), Brooke Roberts (237) and Ochoa (231) leading the way.
The Hornets fought back to take the Baker total pinfall 1,040-876 (191-134, 174-191, 245-178, 188-192, 242-181) to force the Baker best-of-seven – where UMES prevailed 4-2 (214-212, 165-190, 171-170, 196-190, 158-259, 207-191) to advance in the winner’s bracket.
Friday morning, Monmouth needed all three Mega Match rounds to defeat Morgan State, taking the traditional round 965-919 and the Baker best-of-seven four games to none (219-210, 174-169, 202-193, 195-169). The Bears won the Baker total pinfall round, 996-964 (182-183, 157-201, 269-178, 186-164, 202-238).
Norfolk State eliminated Coppin State in the morning round, taking the Mega Match 2-0. The Spartans were then eliminated in the afternoon round, falling 2-0 to UAB – including a heartbreaking 875-873 defeat in the Baker total pinfall round.
Howard was also eliminated Friday afternoon, falling 2-0 to Morgan State.
Four more matches will start at 1 p.m. – a pair of elimination matches and the winner’s bracket semifinals.
Saturday’s action will begin with two elimination matches – Monmouth vs. UAB and Delaware State vs. Morgan State – at 9 a.m., while the winner’s bracket final to determine one of the finalists between Maryland Eastern Shore and North Carolina A&T State, and another elimination match, wrapping up the day at 1 p.m.
Sunday will see one last elimination match at 9 a.m. to determine the second championship finalist, followed by the championship match at 2 p.m.
The championship match will broadcast on ESPNU via re-air on Sunday, April 3 at 5:30 p.m., leading into ESPN’s coverage of the NCAA women’s basketball championship game.
