NORFOLK, Va., March 22, 2022North Carolina A&T State sophomore Melanie Katen was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Bowler of the Year, presented by TowneBank, the conference has announced. Delaware State’s Sydney Reardon was named Rookie of the Year, and North Carolina A&T State’s Kim Terrell-Kearney earned Coach of the Year honors.

All awards were voted on by the conference’s head coaches and sports information directors.
 
Katen averaged 207.9 pins in traditional play this season, with a total pinfall of 8,108, converting on 50.7% of her strikes and 78.2% of her spares (best in the nation). She topped the 200-pin mark 27 times on the season, including a season-best 255 on Feb. 12. Also voted the MEAC Preseason Bowler of the Year prior to the start of the season, Katen led the Aggies to the MEAC regular-season title and a No. 5 ranking in the most recent National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) Top 25 poll. Heading into this past weekend’s action, Katen’s 89.3 fill percentage was the best in the nation, and she was top-10 nationally in pins per frame (20.98). Her baker fill percentage (89.4%) is second in the nation as of Feb. 27, and her traditional fill percentage (89.1%) is sixth.
 
Reardon averaged 197.26 pins in traditional play this season, with a frame average of 19.72, and hit at least nine pins on the first ball 69.9% of the time in 282 traditional frames bowled. In Baker play, Reardon averaged 20.1 pins per frame and averaged nearly nine pinso n first ball (8.93). She had a 49.1 strike percentage in Baker play and 46.8% in traditional play, and Reardon’s single-pin spare percentages were 82.4% in Baker and 81.5% in traditional. In 806 total frames bowled (Baker and traditional) this season, the three-time MEAC Rookie of the Week racked up 392 strikes.
 
Terrell-Kearney led the Aggies to another MEAC regular-season title in 2021-22, going 14-2 in conference play. North Carolina A&T State is 81-37 overall heading into the MEAC Bowling Championship, and the Aggies are currently No. 5 in the country in the latest Top 25 poll from the NTCA. The Aggies have claimed four tournament wins so far this season, including the first MEAC meet of the season, as well as a second-place finish in the Stallings Invitational and a pair of third-place finishes.
 
Joining Katen on the All-MEAC First Team are Delaware State’s Saralyne Nassberg, Maryland Eastern Shore’s Brooke Roberts and North Carolina A&T State’s Ericka Quesada and Lauren Tomaszewski.
 
The 2022 MEAC Bowling Championship is currently set for Thursday through Sunday, March 24-27 at Pinboy’s at the Beach in Virginia Beach, Va. Sunday’s championship match will broadcast via re-air on ESPNU on Sunday, April 3 at 5:30 p.m. leading up to the NCAA women’s basketball championship game.
