BALTIMORE, Md., Sept. 14, 2021 -- The Morgan State University athletic department was well represented at the Districts 7/11 Druid Heights Community Clean-up event, which took place on Saturday, Sept. 11.
Student-athletes from Morgan State's men's and women's track and field, bowling, women's basketball and football programs, took timeout to give back to the community, by participating in the 7th Annual District 7/11 cleanup hosted by Councilman James Torrence of the 7th District and Councilman Eric Costello of the 11th District.
"The Upton/Druid Heights community is one of, if not the most historic black community in the United States. From the birthplace of Thurgood Marshall, to Billie Holliday performances, to planning meetings for legal briefs given in the Brown v Board of Education case, this neighborhood is steeped in civil rights and cultural history," said Councilman Eric T. Costello (11
th District).
"To have the Morgan State Bears partner with us for the third year has been a great experience. I'm thrilled we could provide over 100 student-athletes the opportunity to learn this history and participate in giving back to our community. Go Bears."
The September event is one of the biggest and best each year with the purpose to clean and beautify both Druid Hill Park and the historic Druid Heights Community.
Volunteers worked in the park, building, organizing, painting and picking up trash, while Morgan State student-athletes and coaches worked with the Druid Heights Community Development Corporation on greening and beautification tasks in the Druid Heights neighborhood.
"It was an honor serving and connecting with the community leaders of the Druid Heights Maggie Quille Community Center and Councilman James Torrence (District 7) and Eric Costello (District 11) for the Annual 7/11 Druid Heights Community Clean-up," Chad Allen, Morgan State Director of Student-Athlete Development, said.
"As a West Baltimore native, the opportunity to intentionally collaborate with our student-athletes, coaches and staff in the manner of impacting the Druid Heights community through a beautification project was a priceless experience."
