DOVER, Del., May 6, 2021 -- Former Delaware State baseball standout Garrett Lawson struck out the first three batters he faced in his professional debut this week.
Lawson, now pitching for the Major League Baseball Los Angeles Angels' Single-A affiliate Inland Empire 66ers, struck out the side in the eighth inning of the 66ers' season opener against the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. His stat line for the game included two innings pitched, four strikeouts, two hits, one run and a walk.
A native of Dover, Del., Lawson was selected by the Angels in the 19th round of the 2019 MLB draft, the 571st overall pick.
In 2019 at Delaware State, Lawson was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Pitcher of the Year and named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Rawlings NCAA Division I All-Region Second Team.
In his last season with the Hornets, Lawson was 7-3 with a MEAC-best 1.85 earned run average during the 2019 regular season. He also led the league with a .196 opponent batting average and tied for the conference high with 97 strikeouts, averaging 11.2 Ks per nine innings, during the regular year.
