NORFOLK, Va., May 10, 2021—
North Carolina Central redshirt junior Luis DeLeon was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, the conference office announced today.
North Carolina A&T State’s Xavier Meachem was named Rookie of the Week, while
North Carolina Central redshirt junior Austin Vernon earned Pitcher of the Week honors.
DeLeon (r-Jr., OF, Providence, R.I.) had four multi-hit games (including two three-hit efforts) in a four-game series win over Delaware State this past weekend. He hit .556 (10-for-18) in the series, while also slugging .833 and stealing three bags in as many attempts. In the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, DeLeon went 3-for-5 with a double, a triple and two RBIs, and he went 3-for-5 again with two RBIs and two steals on Sunday.
Meachem (Fr., RHP, Winterville, N.C.) picked up his first collegiate win in relief on Sunday against Florida A&M, tossing 3.2 innings of shutout ball, not giving up a single hit and striking out eight. His performance allowed the Aggies to come back and win the game in extra innings.
Vernon (r-Jr., RHP, Raleigh, N.C.) threw the first no-hitter in North Carolina Central modern program history (since 2007), striking out eight and facing just one batter over the minimum. He also notched 13 groundouts and just three fly balls in picking up his fourth win of the season.

Jordan Haddaway (Delaware State) struck out four in five innings against North Carolina Central, scattering four hits and giving up just one run in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader.
John Weglarz (Delaware State) hit a three-run home run in the series against North Carolina Central.
Chandellor Benton (Florida A&M) notched three saves in the Rattlers’ series win over North Carolina A&T State, throwing a combined 3.0 innings of shutout ball.
Adam Haiadermota (Florida A&M) had four RBIs and four runs scored in a four-game series win over North Carolina A&T State, including a 2-for-4 effort with two RBIs and a double in the opener.
Ethan Jenkins (Florida A&M) was 2-for-4 with five RBIs and two runs scored in Sunday’s game against North Carolina A&T State.
Dustin Baber (North Carolina A&T State) went 3-for-5 in Sunday’s extra-inning win over Florida A&M with a triple, two home runs and six RBIs.
