Morgan State Wins Virginia Union Invitational
GLEN ALLEN, Va. -- The Morgan State Lady Bears took home the spoils of the Virginia Union Invitational by winning two Best of 7 Baker matches on Sunday against Sacred Heart and Coppin State.
Coming into Sunday's championship rounds, Morgan State was seeded second in total pinfall from the previous two days of competition. It had to face Sacred Heart in a Best of 7 Baker match, who was the #1 seed in the tournament. Morgan State took a commanding 3-0 lead against the Pioneers, but true to the strength of their resolve, Sacred Heart battled back in Game 4 and Game 5 winning 172-161 and 256-190.
That's when in Game 6 the Bears unleashed a string of eight strikes in a row from the fifth frame through the 12th, sealing a 258-202 win and match victory by a 4-2 margin. This win earned a bye for the Bears in Round #2 and automatically placed them in the championship match.
In the semifinal round it was Coppin State defeating Sacred Heart 4-1, setting up a championship match of the Baltimore crosstown rivals.

Coppin State Comes in Second in Virginia Union Invitational
GLEN ALLEN, Va. -- Coppin State defeated Bowie State and upset 12
th-ranked Sacred Heart to advance to the Championship Game of the Virginia Union Invitational before falling, 4-2 to Morgan State on Sunday afternoon at Bowl America Short Pump.
The Eagles finished the tournament with a 9-3 mark.
To open bracket play, Coppin swept Bowie State, 4-0 which included a massive 241-157 victory in the second baker match against the Bulldogs. The Eagles edged out Bowie State in the third game before moving on to the second round with a 185-159 win.
Sacred Heart edged Coppin, 159-158 in the opening game before the Eagles won four-straight to advance to the championship game. Coppin defeated the Pioneers, 200-159 in the second game to tie the match and won the next three games comfortably to move on.

UAB Opens Season with 11th-Place Finish at DezyStrong Classic
CORAM, N.Y. -- The UAB bowling team opened the 2021-22 season with an 11th-place finish at the DezyStrong Classic.
The Blazers finished 6-7 on the weekend, including a 3-2 record on the second day.
Individually, Elise London led the Blazers with a 31st-place finish with a total pinfall of 919. Katie Hurley followed closely behind with a total pinfall of 918 and a 32nd-place finish. Jamie Krasnigor (869, 41st), Shauna Rodgers (820, 48th) and Jillian Hulsey (575, 68th) rounded out the top-five for UAB.

Monmouth Faces Tough Competition at DezyStrong
CORAM, N.Y. -- The Monmouth University bowling team continued its season at the Dezy Strong Classic hosted by Adelphi over the weekend
The Hawks went 6-7 over three days as they battled some of the top bowling programs in the nation. The team fell to No. 7 Youngstown State, No. 10 Stephen F. Austin, and No. 16 Tulane in Baker matches on Friday, and were bested by No. 4 Vanderbilt and No. 22 Prairie View A&M in traditional play on Saturday.
Monmouth did pick up a victory over No. 25 Adelphi for the second consecutive weekend, winning 936-923 in a traditional match.
Saige Yamada and Jenna Lehrer finished among the top-20 individual competitors during the second day of the event, placing 16
th and 17
th, respectively. Over five games, Yamada posted an average score of 195.2, bowling two 200+ games.
Lehrer achieved a total pinfall of 973 over her five games, rolling three 200+ games, including a high of 224.

Brewer Shines for Norfolk State in Season Opener
GLEN ALLEN, Va. -- Crystal Brewer bowled one of the best single games in Norfolk State bowling history, a 279, on the way to a 216.6 average as the Spartans opened the 2021-22 season over the weekend at the Virginia Union Invitational.
Brewer's 279 is her personal best and ties Briana Gardner for the third-highest game in the school's recorded history. The game came in Saturday's first traditional game against Fayetteville State and kicked off a 4-1 day for the Spartans.
In all, Norfolk State went a combined 6-6 in baker and traditional games and finished in sixth place at its season-opening tournament. Brewer had the third-highest average for the weekend, a 216.6 over the Spartans' five traditional games on Saturday.
