GREENSBORO, N.C. – The North Carolina A&T State University Department of Athletics and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (Blue Cross NC) are teaming up to support Communities In Schools of Greater Greensboro with a weekly donation of 200 meals for children in Greensboro over the next six weeks.
The meals, prepared by Painted Plate Catering, will be distributed on consecutive Wednesdays, which began Sept. 23, at three different recreation centers throughout the city, thanks to support from the City of Greensboro.
Windsor Community Recreation Center, at 1601 E. Gate City Blvd., will host the distributions today and Oct. 7 and 14; Warnersville Community Recreation Center, at 601 Doak St., on Oct. 21; and Peeler Community Recreation Center, at 1300 Sykes Ave., on Oct. 28.
"During these unprecedented times, we want to ensure that NC A&T Athletics is doing all that we can to assist in our community," Earl Hilton, Director of Athletics at NC A&T, said. "This program allows us to directly provide meals to those in need, and we are proud to partner with Blue Cross NC, Communities in Schools and the City of Greensboro."
Communities In Schools of Greater Greensboro is a nonprofit whose mission is to help children in the city move beyond their circumstances with an individualized approach to make them successful. The approach centers on giving each child the "Five Basics:"
- A one-on-one relationship with a caring adult
- A safe place to learn and grow
- A healthy start and a healthy future
- A marketable skill to use upon graduation
- A chance to give back to peers and community
"We are proud to support Communities In Schools of Greater Greensboro's mission of addressing children's unmet needs so that they can succeed in life," Cheryl Parquet, director of community engagement and marketing activation at Blue Cross NC, said. "Improving food security in North Carolina is a long-term commitment of Blue Cross NC, and this program helps increase access to nutritious food for our Greensboro children."
