GREENSBORO, N.C. – For the third straight year, the Coppin State baseball team received the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Team Academic Excellence Award, it was announced by the organization on Wednesday morning.
The Eagles were one of just 65 NCAA Div. I teams, and one of just two MEAC schools to receive the honor, which recognizes programs that record at least a 3.0 Team GPA for the academic year.
The Eagles recorded a 3.30 team GPA for the 2019-20 academic year, which included 18 players recording over a 3.0.
"I'm proud of the culture that our student-athletes have established for the baseball team pertaining to academic achievement," head coach Sherman Reed said. "It's become more the norm and expectation than simply a goal. We have preached as a coaching staff that every opportunity that'll come their way begins with high academic achievement. I'm even more proud of their accomplishments this past spring given the sudden adjustment to distance learning."
Not only have the Eagles performed well in the classroom the last three years, it also coincides with arguably the best run in program history on the field. In 2018, Coppin won the MEAC Northern Division title with an impressive 18-4 record in league play.
The following season, the Eagles won a school-record 24 games.
Over the last two full seasons, Coppin State went a league-best 33-13 during MEAC play.
