DOVER, Del., May 18, 2020 -- Delaware State's student-athletes soared to new heights in the classroom during the 2019-20 academic year. According to university academic reports, Hornet athletes posted a combined grade-point-average (GPA) of 3.35 (on a 4.0 scale) for the spring 2020 semester and a cumulative mark of 3.22 for the 2019-20 school year.
Among the report's highlights, each of the Hornets' 18 athletics programs recorded a team GPA of 3.0 or higher during the spring semester, marking a first-time achievement for a term in recorded department history. Eight teams posted grade point averages of 3.5 or higher, led by bowling at 3.85. Equestrian was second at 3.76, followed by women's tennis (3.71), volleyball (3.71) and soccer (3.65) to round out the top five.
For the year, 17 of DSU's 18 programs achieved a team GPA of 3.0 or higher. Bowling was tops with a 3.80 grade-point-average for the 2019-20 academic year. Equestrian (3.68), women's tennis (3.53) and volleyball (3.53) also topped the 3.50 team GPA score.
"I want to extend great praise and pride to our student-athletes, our Academic Support for Student-Athletes (ASSA) staff, our compliance leadership and head coaches for their marvelous work, collaborative support, and effective leadership," said DSU Director of Athletics Dr. D. Scott Gines. "This is a wonderful achievement, particularly as all had to adapt to on-line course delivery, new work environments and habits, and in the midst of suspended practices and competitions."
In addition, 71 of Delaware State's more than 360 student-athletes earned a perfect 4.0 average for the spring semester and 15 achieved the mark for the school year.
Gines added," It's a great sign and the most important investment of all - the upward advancement of our student-athletes. Although we head into 2020-21 with an uncertain return to play timeline, we do so with three consecutive semesters of upward academic performance, our largest team rosters in history, and, at this juncture, our most robust home competition schedules ever - all are foundational positives of great strength and promise."
