NORFOLK, Va., March 2, 2020North Carolina Central junior Luis DeLeon was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Player of the Week, the conference office announced today. Coppin State’s Tim Ruffino earned Rookie of the Week honors, and Bethune-Cookman freshman Alejandro Valiente and Maryland Eastern Shore senior Dwayne Marshall were named Co-Pitchers of the Week.
 
DeLeon (5-11, Jr., Providence, R.I.) was 10-for-21 (.476) in five games at the plate this past week, leading the Eagles to a 3-2 mark. He drove in 10 runs and scored six times, while hitting three home runs, two doubles and working two walks for an on-base percentage of .522 and a 1.000 slugging percentage. DeLeon also stole two bases on the week, and he had multiple hits in all five games. He drove in three on Saturday against Saint Joseph’s and added four more RBIs on Sunday.
 
Ruffino (5-10, Fr., Bogalusa, La.) picked up the win in the Eagles’ 11-1 drubbing of Richmond, throwing a scoreless 2.1 innings – during which he gave up no hits and struck out three.
 
Valiente (6-0, Fr., Bayamon, P.R.) struck out eight in seven shutout innings on Sunday against Florida Gulf Coast, scattering five hits and giving up just one walk in notching his second win of the 2020 season.
 
Marshall (6-2, Sr., Piscataway, N.J.) was key in the Hawks’ doubleheader sweep of Mount St. Mary’s, getting the start in one of the games and tossing seven shutout innings. He gave up just three hits and struck out six on the afternoon in picking up his first win of the season.
 
Other Top Performers
Matthew Garcia (B-CU) went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs in Sunday’s win over Florida Gulf Coast.
 
Marcos Castillo (CSU) was 2-for-5 with three RBIs and a home run against Richmond.
 
Bradley Tuttle (CSU) struck out six in 2.2 innings of work against Richmond, giving up just one hit.
 
Tristen Cooper (FAMU) had four hits and drew four walks in a three-game sweep of Dayton.
 
Morgan Mendez (FAMU) picked up the save against Dayton on Saturday, striking out five in three innings.
 
Michael Johnson (NCAT) struck out eight in seven innings of one-run ball in a win over Boston College.
 
Camden Williamson (NCAT) was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored in a win over Fairfield.
 
Shane Davis (NCCU) scattered five hits and struck out eight in six innings against Saint Joseph’s.
 
Seth Hockett (NSU) recorded 10 strikeouts in seven innings against Albany.
 
Matt Smith (UMES) hit two home runs in a doubleheader sweep of Mount St. Mary’s and combined for six RBIs.
