DOVER, Del., June 19. 2019--Delaware State pitcher Garrett Lawson has collected another post-season honor. Lawson, a recent 19th round draft pick of Major League Baseball’s Los Angeles Angels has been named to the 2019 East – American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Rawlings NCAA Division I All-Region Second Team.
Lawson, the 2019 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Pitcher of the Year, is the first Hornet to earn all-region honors since Scott Davis is 2013.
A three-time MEAC Pitcher of the Week, Lawson was 7-3 with a MEAC-best 1.85 earned run average during the 2019 regular season. He also led the league with a .196 opponent batting average and tied for the conference high with 97 strikeouts, averaging 11.2 Ks per nine innings, during the regular year.
Lawson had a career-high 14 strikeouts in seven innings in a two-hit 10-0 victory over Coppin State on April 12, struck out 10 without a walk in a 14-0 win at Norfolk State on April 27, and did not allow an earned run while striking out nine in eight innings of a 5-1 victory over Coppin State on March 22.
The all-region teams are selected by members of the ABCA.
The ABCA, founded in 1945, is the primary professional organization for baseball coaches at the amateur level. Its over 11,000 members represent all 50 states and 23 countries. Since its initial meeting of 27 college baseball coaches in June 1945, Association membership has broadened to include eight divisions: NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA, NJCAA, Pacific Association Division, high school and youth.
