DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., May 15, 2019--
Jared Weber had three hits and Kyle Coleman went the distance as Florida A&M opened the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Championship with a 13-3 run-rule victory over Delaware State Wednesday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

The Rattlers (23-31) will face Norfolk State Thursday at 3:30 p.m. Delaware State (18-24) will face the Coppin State-Savannah State loser later this evening in an elimination game.

A four-run second inning put Florida A&M in early control, while Coleman struck out seven and walked one in eight innings.

FAMU head coach Jamey Shouppe noted that Coleman exited his last appearance against North Carolina Central with a blister.

“We were unsure whether or not Kyle could go for us,” Shouppe said. “Those were eight very effective innings for us today. Winning the first round is always big.”

Weber’s three hits and two RBIs paced a balance Rattler offense that generated 14 hits and chased Delaware State starter Garrett Lawson, the MEAC Pitcher of the Year, after three innings.

“We were patiently aggressive,” Shouppe said. “We wanted to get to their bullpen.”

Delaware State got as close as 7-3 after five, but the Rattlers pulled away and ended it with a five-run outburst in the eighth.

In addition to Weber, Willis McDaniel, Brett Maxwell and Octavien Moyer each drove in two runs for the Rattlers.
John Weglarz had three hits for the Hornets, while Miguel Rivera drove in two runs with a fifth-inning triple.
