DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., May 15, 2019–Miguel Rivera homered twice as Delaware State fended off Coppin State 6-5 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Championship first round Wednesday night, eliminating the Eagles with their second loss of the day.
The Hornets (19-24) will face an opponent to be determined in another elimination game Thursday at 7 p.m. Coppin State’s season ends at 24-24.
Rivera, a sophomore from Dover, Del., hit a solo shot in the first, then registered a two-run blast in the seventh that scored both he and John Weglarz, who earlier had brought in Tommy Jordan with a single as the Hornets took a commanding 5-1 lead.
Coppin State made a late rally, scoring three in the ninth on an RBI single from Justin Banks and a two-run double by Nazier McIlwain to close to 6-5.
Jeremy Carrow came in and got the final out, as Weglarz, who finished with four hits and accounted for two of Delaware State’s other three runs, snagged a line drive to end the game.
Carrow picked up his third save of the season.
Darnell Masionet, a senior lefthander from Slicklerville, N.J. picked up the win to improve to 3-2, scattering seven hits while walking one and striking out nine in seven innings.
Coppin State tied the game at 1-1 when Justin Banks scored on an error after McIlwain singled.
Todd Henry doubled home Cole Garey to help Delaware State regain the lead in the second.
Spoiled in the defeat was a career-high 13-strikeout effort from Coppin State’s Devin Rivera Ozuna.
