NORFOLK, Va., April 15, 2019Norfolk State sophomore Alsander Womack was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Player of the Week, the conference office announced today. Florida A&M’s Robert Robinson earned Rookie of the Week honors, while Delaware State junior Garrett Lawson was named Pitcher of the Week.
 
Womack (5-8, 210, So., Waxhaw, N.C.) was 12-for-18 (.667) at the plate this past week, leading the Spartans to a 3-1 mark – including a sweep of Maryland Eastern Shore in which Norfolk State’s offense exploded. He had at least two hits in each game, and in the series against he Hawks, he was 10-for-14 at the plate. He drove in four runs in Friday’s second game, going 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored, and on Sunday, he scored twice while driving in three and going 3-for-4. Boasting the nation’s top batting average (.463), Womack had 11 RBIs for the week while slugging .778 and notching a .684 on-base percentage.
 
Robinson (5-9, 190, r-Fr., Pompano Beach, Fla.) went 6-for-15 (.400) at the plate this past week with three RBIs. He had an RBI in three of the Rattlers’ four games this past week, including a walkoff single in the 10th inning to give FAMU the series-opening win against Bethune-Cookman on Friday. He also had an RBI in Saturday’s win over the Wildcats, going 3-for-4 at the plate.
 
Lawson (6-3, 200, Jr., Dover, Del.) struck out a career-high 14 batters on Friday in the Hornets’ 10-0 seven-inning win over Northern Division leader Coppin State, going the distance and giving up just two hits in the shutout. Eight of his first nine outs of the game were strikeouts, and he struck out the side three times in the contest.
 
Other Top Performers
Josten Heron (BCU) hit five doubles in five games this past week, and he was 4-for-5 with two RBIs in a win over Florida A&M.
 
Anthony Maldonado (B-CU) struck out a career-high 13 in eight innings of four-hit ball against Florida A&M.
 
Erik Crossman (CSU) was 3-for-4 with three RBIs, a double and a home run in Sunday’s finale against Delaware State.
 
Matt Day (CSU) went 3-for-5 with a double, triple and RBI in game two against Delaware State.
 
Devin Rivera Ozuna (CSU) struck out six in seven innings on Sunday against Delaware State.
 
Jared Gillis (DSU) had seven RBIs in a three-game series against Northern Division leader Coppin State.
 
Tucker Rayburn (FAMU) was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored, including a two-run home run, in a series-opening win over Bethune-Cookman.
 
Josh Wilson (FAMU) allowed just one run in six innings in a midweek win over Alabama State.
 
Josh Brammell (NCCU) went 2-for-4 with two RBIs against North Carolina A&T State following a 3-for-5 effort against Duke.
