MEAC Announces Weekly Baseball Honors

NORFOLK, Va., March 25, 2019Coppin State junior Justin Banks was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Player of the Week, the conference office announced today. North Carolina A&T State’s Tony Mack earned Rookie of the Week honors, while North Carolina A&T State senior Tim Luth was named Pitcher of the Week.
 
Banks (6-2, 245, Jr., Fairfield, Calif.) batted .462 (6-for-13) in four games this past week, slugging .846 and boasting a .632 on-base percentage. He drove in four runs and scored four times, and in the second game of the series against Delaware State, Banks went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a home run. He also had two doubles, five walks – two intentional – and was hit by a pitch.
 
Mack (5-7, 180, r-Fr., Smithfield, N.C.) went 3-for-5 in the series finale against Bethune-Cookman, scoring twice and driving in a pair of runs. He also stole three bases in that contest, and earlier in the week, he had an RBI in the Aggies’ win over crosstown rival UNC Greensboro. For the week, Mack hit .308.
 
Luth (6-2, 205, Sr., Dunedin, Fla.) tossed a complete-game shutout against Bethune-Cookman on Friday, helping get the Aggies started on what became a three-game sweep of the Wildcats. Luth scattered three hits in picking up his third win and second shutout of the season, striking out three in the process.
 
Other Top Performers
Branden Redfern (CSU) allowed one run in 5.2 innings of relief, striking out eight and picking up the win in the second game against Delaware State.
 
Willis McDaniel (FAMU) was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored in Sunday’s win over Wofford.
 
Devynn Hancock (MDES) had six RBIs in the first two games against Norfolk State, including a double and a triple in the first game.
 
Caleb Walston (MDES) got the win in relief against Norfolk State, throwing four scoreless innings.
 
Dawnoven Smith (NCAT) had the game-winning hit in the 11th inning on Sunday as the Aggies swept Bethune-Cookman.
 
Trey Maslin (NCCU) was 3-for-4 in the second game against Savannah State with one of his two RBIs for the week.
 
Caleb Hill (SSU) gave up one run in eight innings pitched in a win over North Carolina Central.
 
Luis Lamarche (SSU) was 2-for-3 with two RBIs on Sunday as the Tigers completed the three-game sweep of North Carolina Central.
