MEAC Announces Weekly Baseball Honors

NORFOLK, Va., Feb. 25, 2019Coppin State sophomore Marcos Castillo and Bethune-Cookman redshirt senior Brandon Wilkes were selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Co-Players of the Week, the conference office announced today. North Carolina Central’s Ryan Miller earned Rookie of the Week honors, while North Carolina A&T State senior Tim Luth was named Pitcher of the Week.
 
Castillo (6-1, 180, So., Round Rock, Texas) recorded back-to-back three-hit, three-RBI games in a series win over Albany. The current MEAC leader in hitting, on-base slugging scored three times, while also hitting two doubles, two triples and stealing a pair of bases. Castillo was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored in the series opener, with a double and a triple, before going 3-for-4 again in a 15-3 win in the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader.
 
Wilkes (6-2, 210, r-Sr., Holly Hill, Fla.) was a combined 8-for-15 at the plate (.553) this past week for the Wildcats, with seven RBIs and three runs scored. He had five doubles and a home run during the week, and his bat helped Bethune-Cookman take a three-game series against Boston College. He also picked up the win in the opener of the Boston College series, pitching in relief. In the last two Boston College games, Wilkes was 6-for-9 at the plate with seven RBIs. He had three doubles on Saturday, and on Sunday, he had two doubles and a homer.
 
Miller (6-2, 210, Fr., Blandon, Pa.) was strong on the mound for the second straight weekend, striking out nine in 5.1 innings of work. He gave up just four hits in the series finale against Delaware State, to go along with one walk and one earned run.
 
Luth (6-2, 205, Sr., Dunedin, Fla.) took a no-hitter into the eighth inning against Northern Kentucky on Sunday, a game the Aggies ultimately won 3-0. In 7.1 innings of work, Luth struck out six and walked just two in picking up his first win of the season.

Anthony Maldonado (B-CU) struck out five in six innings of work against Boston College, giving up just two runs.
 
Devin Rivera Ozuna (CSU) struck out a career-high eight against Albany, giving up just two runs and four hits in six innings.
 
Jonathan Rice (CSU) struck out four batters in two innings of work against Albany.
 
Garrett Lawson (DSU) struck out eight in five shutout innings against North Carolina Central.
 
Brett Maxwell (FAMU) hit .421 in eight games and drove in five runs for the week for the Rattlers.
 
Brandon Melendez (NCAT) went 5-for-9 at the plate for the week with three runs scored and two doubles.
 
Dionte Brown (NSU) had a two-run single against NJIT and went 2-for-5 for the weekend.
 
Jonathan Mahoney (NSU) tied his career high with nine strikeouts against NJIT.
 
Caleb Ward (NSU) had three RBIs and hit a home run in a doubleheader against NJIT.
