NORFOLK, Va.–Summer collegiate baseball leagues around the country are in full swing, and current Norfolk State players Justin Hayes and Alsander Womack have been selected as all-stars in their respective leagues.
Hayes, who is playing this summer for the Strasburg (Va.) Express of the Valley Baseball League (VBL), will play on the North team in this Sunday's VBL All-Star Game at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va. Womack, who suits up this summer for the Kernersville (N.C.) Bulldogs in the Carolina-Virginia College League (CVSCL), will play on the South team in this Saturday's All-Star Game at Victory Christian High in Charlotte, N.C.
Hayes, a rising senior outfielder at NSU, enters the All-Star Game with a .337 average, six doubles, one homer, 18 runs batted in and eight stolen bases for Strasburg. He has struck out just nine times and has an OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage) of .845. His lone homer this summer to date was a walk-off grand slam in a Strasburg win on Monday. Hayes is coming off a junior campaign which saw the speedy lead-off hitter earn First Team All-MEAC and Second Team All-ABCA East Region accolades.
Womack, a rising sophomore second baseman, is batting .304 with three home runs, 14 RBIs and four stolen bases in 20 games so far for Kernersville. He has walked 15 times and struck out just six in 72 at-bats, good for an OPS of .994 at the break. Womack earned freshman All-American honors after his strong rookie season at NSU in 2018.
