NORFOLK, Va., June 11, 2018—The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) has named Isaiah Chambers from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore as the 2018 Male Student-Athlete of the Year, the conference office announced today.
“I would like to congratulate Isaiah Chambers,” Commissioner Dr. Dennis Thomas said. “He’s had an absolutely phenomenal career at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, not only as a student-athlete, but academically and in extracurricular activities as well. I wish him continued success and I would like to thank his family and all of the people who had a positive influence on Isaiah.”
Chambers, a native of Bowie, Md., competed on the Hawks baseball team all four years. He played a vital role in making the transition for new head coach Brian Holloman as smooth as possible by stepping into the role of everyday second baseman and performing at a high level, helping the Hawks reach the MEAC Baseball Championship in Daytona Beach, Fla.
In fact, the Hawks qualified for the MEAC Championship in three of Chambers’ four seasons. This past year, Chambers was strong in the second half of the campaign, reaching base safely in 10 consecutive games as the Hawks closed out the season with a sweep of rival Delaware State to clinch a postseason berth.
Chambers completed his degree in Special Education on May 25 with a 3.6 GPA.
During his time at Maryland Eastern Shore, Chambers received a number of scholarships and awards – including the Jostens Sportsmanship Award (as awarded by the university), The Hazel Endowment (as awarded by the university), the MEAC Commissioner’s All-Academic Team (2015-18), the Diverse Issues in Higher Education Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award (2018) and 2018 Teachers of Promise.
Additionally, he served in leadership roles, including vice president of the Maryland Eastern Shore Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), president of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., Pi Epsilon Chapter, and Homecoming Steering Committee Chair.
Chambers worked hard from day to day as a student-athlete to excel both in the classroom and on the diamond. He was highly regarded by his coaches as one of the most coachable athletes they have ever worked with at Maryland Eastern Shore. They added he has certainly raised the baseball standard at Maryland Eastern Shore to new heights with his fine showmanship and success on and off the field.
