MEAC Announces Weekly Baseball Honors

NORFOLK, Va., May 7, 2018Florida A&M senior John Capra was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Player of the Week, the conference office announced today. Norfolk State’s Alsander Womack earned Rookie of the Week honors, while Maryland Eastern Shore senior Toby Hoskins and North Carolina Central junior Chris Kernen were named Co-Pitchers of the Week.
 
Capra (5-10, 175, Sr., Melbourne, Fla.) went 5-for-11 (.454) in the Rattlers’ three-game series at North Carolina Central, driving in six runs in securing the series win. In Florida A&M’s 7-5 win on Sunday, Capra hit a three-run home run and added a two-run single, driving in five runs for the game. He had a pair of multi-hit games in the series, including a 2-for-4 effort in the series opener.
 
Womack (5-9, 225, Fr., Waxhaw, N.C.) had two home runs and four extra-base hits for the week, recording a pair of 2-for-4 games – one against Longwood and another against Coppin State. In the second game of the Coppin State doubleheader, Womack drove in four runs, hitting a double and a grand slam. He had home runs in both games of the doubleheader, and Womack slugged 1.180 for the week.
 
Hoskins (6-4, 205, Sr., North East, Md.) tossed eight shutout innings against Delaware State, scattering seven hits and striking out eight to win the series opener and set the stage for the Hawks’ three-game sweep of the Hornets.
 
Kernen (6-3, 215, Jr., Greensboro, N.C.) struck out career-high 10 batters in a complete-game win over Florida A&M, giving up just three hits and one run. He didn’t give up a walk and, at one point, retired 15 consecutive batters.
 
Other Top Performers
Marcos Castillo (CSU) was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs against George Washington.
 
Andres Santana (CSU) was 3-for-7 with two doubles and two RBIs in a doubleheader sweep of Norfolk State.
 
Jahmon Taylor (CSU) struck out nine against Norfolk State in a win that clinched the Northern Division title for the Eagles.
 
Jamie Grant (FAMU) picked up two wins in three relief appearances this past week, both against North Carolina Central.
 
Tyler Friis (MDES) had three RBIs in a series sweep of Delaware State that helped the Hawks clinch a postseason berth.
 
Tim Luth (NCAT) went seven innings against Savannah State, striking out three to pick up his fifth win of the season.
 
Dawnoven Smith (NCAT) went 4-for-4 with three doubles and three runs scored in Sunday’s series finale against Savannah State.
 
Corey Joyce (NCCU) had a pair of two-hit games against Florida A&M, recording a pair of doubles.
 
Seth Hockett (NSU) struck out five in five innings to pick up a non-conference win against Longwood.
