DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., May 18, 2018—For the second straight night, North Carolina A&T State used the bats to great effect, defeating Coppin State 15-7 to advance to the title game of the 2018 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Championship at Sliwa Stadium.
The Aggies (31-22) pounded out 15 hits and took advantage of four errors.
The Eagles struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after Caleb Duhay doubled to left field and later scored on a single from Nazier McIlwain.
But the Aggies responded in the top of the second, tying the game at 1-1 on an RBI triple from Myles Sowell. He later scored on a passed ball to give North Carolina A&T State a 2-1 lead.
Greg White added to that lead in the top of the third, leading off the frame with his first home run of the season.
An RBI double from Marcos Castillo in the bottom of the fourth – a blast to left that was nearly a home run – cut the Aggies’ lead to 3-2. But North Carolina A&T State responded in earnest, bursting out for seven runs in the top of the fifth.
Forest Kimbrell got the scoring started with an RBI single, and he later scored on an A.J. Hunt single. Dawnoven Smith then doubled Hunt home, before Smith scored himself on an error.
Zach McLean then added a two-run bomb – his second homer of the tournament – and Ryne Stanley hit a solo shot to put the Aggies up 10-2.
After Coppin State (21-22-1), the Northern Division’s top seed, scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 10-4 – and added a run in the sixth to close to within 10-5 after an Andres Santana sac fly – Myles Sowell scored on a wild pitch in the seventh to put the Aggies up 11-5.
White hit his second homer of the night, another solo shot, in the eighth inning, scoring the first of two runs in that inning. Kimbrell later walked, stole second and scored on an infield single to push the Aggies’ lead to 13-5.
An RBI triple from Corey Treyes in the bottom of the inning cut the lead to 13-6.
White recorded a sac fly in the ninth, his third RBI of the night, to give the Aggies a 14-6 lead, before Sowell scored on another wild pitch.
