MEAC Announces Weekly Baseball Honors

NORFOLK, Va., April 9, 2018Bethune-Cookman junior Joseph Fernando and North Carolina A&T State senior Milton Rivera were selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Co-Players of the Week, the conference office announced today. Coppin State’s Derek Lohr earned Rookie of the Week honors, while Bethune-Cookman sophomore Anthony Maldonado was named Pitcher of the Week.
 
Fernando (6-0, 185, Jr., Brooklyn, N.Y.) was 7-for-14 (.500) at the plate in four games this past week, leading the Wildcats to a 3-1 record and a sweep of Savannah State. He opened that series with a 3-for-5 game, hitting a triple and driving in a run – before adding two more RBIs and another triple in the second game of the doubleheader. In the finale against the Tigers, Fernando went 2-for-3 at the plate, driving in three runs and hitting a double.
 
Rivera (5-9, 175, Sr., Humacao, Puerto Rico) drove in four runs this past week in helping the Aggies go 3-1, while going 8-for-17 (.471) at the plate and hitting a pair of home runs. He went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a homer against Presbyterian, before adding a 3-for-4 effort with another home run in the second game of a doubleheader sweep of Florida A&M. Rivera scored five runs for the week and added a pair of stolen bases.
 
Lohr (6-0, 190, Fr., Bothell, Wash.) had four RBIs in Coppin State’s three-game sweep of Maryland Eastern Shore, while going a combined 4-for-9 (.444) at the plate for the series. He opened the series with a 2-for-3 game, driving in a pair of runs, scoring twice and hitting a double. He followed that up in the series finale with another 2-for-3 effort, a double and two RBIs.
 
Maldonado (6-4, 190, So., West Palm Beach, Fla.) tossed a complete-game shutout in the second game of the Wildcats’ doubleheader against Savannah State. In the seven-inning contest, the MEAC Preseason Pitcher of the Year struck out five and scattered three hits.
 
Other Top Performers
Giovany Lorenzo (B-CU) had two RBIs against FIU before hitting a triple and driving in a pair in the second game of a doubleheader against Savannah State.
 
Nazier McIlwain (CSU) had a pair of two-hit games and drew five walks in four games this past week.
 
Corey Treyes (CSU) earned a pair of saves against Maryland Eastern Shore, striking out five in 2.2 shutout innings.
 
Cole Garey (DSU) drove in a career-high four runs against Norfolk State, hitting a double and a home run.
 
Darnell Maisonet (DSU) went 2-for-4 in the series opener against Norfolk State, before tossing a complete game to clinch the series.
 
Toby Hoskins (MDES) struck out five in five innings of work against Coppin State.
 
Jamison Trower (MDES) was 2-for-3 with a walk in the second game of a doubleheader against Coppin State.
 
Avery Tunnell (MDES) walked four times in the second game of a doubleheader against Coppin State.
 
Tim Luth (NCAT) struck out four in six innings in a win over Florida A&M.
 
Justice Sampson (NCCU) had six strikeouts and just one run allowed in a combined 5.0 innings of relief.
 
Carter Williams (NCCU) had a pair of multi-hit games against George Washington, including a 3-for-5 effort in the opener.
 
Justin Hayes (NSU) hit .571 in a three-game set against Delaware State and had a .750 on-base percentage.
 
Jonathan Mahoney (NSU) had nine strikeouts against Delaware State in picking up his fourth win of the season.
 
Joey Santos (NSU) picked up his third save of the season against Delaware State, striking out four in 2.2 innings.
