NORFOLK, Va., April 30, 2018—
North Carolina Central sophomore Corey Joyce was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Player of the Week, the conference office announced today.
Coppin State’s Marcos Castillo earned Rookie of the Week honors, while
North Carolina Central senior Jonathan Figueroa was named Pitcher of the Week.
Joyce (6-1, 190, So., Lexington, N.C.) batted .643 (9-for-14) in four games this past week, driving in eight runs and scoring six times. Joyce recorded multiple hits in all four games for the week, starting with a 2-for-3 effort with a double and two RBIs in the Eagles’ win over UNC Asheville. In the series opener against Savannah State, he went 3-for-5 with a double, and home run and five RBIs, falling a triple shy of the cycle. Joyce did not strike out at all during the week, and he walked five times and swiped five bases.
Castillo (6-0, 175, Fr., Round Rock, Texas) batted .600 (6-for-10) over the weekend in a three-game series against Delaware State, driving in five runs and scoring five times. He drove in at least one run in each game of the series, helping the Eagles take two out of three from the Hornets – including a 3-for-4 effort in the second game, with three RBIs and two runs scored. He had an RBI triple in the series opener and walked twice over the weekend.
Figueroa (6-1, 205, Sr., Chicago, Ill.) made three appearances this past week, tossing a combined 6.0 shutout innings, striking out eight and giving up just four hits. He tossed two scoreless innings against UNC Asheville, striking out two in picking up his sixth win of the season. He threw three innings in the finale against Savannah State, striking out four and giving up just two hits to again pick up the win.

Caleb Duhay (CSU) had seven RBIs in the series against Delaware State, including four in the finale.
Jahmon Taylor (CSU) struck out eight and gave up just one run in a win over Delaware State.
Miguel Rivera (DSU) went 3-for-5 with a double, a triple, five RBIs and two runs scored in a 14-12 win over Coppin State.
Dillon Oxyer (MDES) went 4-for-7 at the plate, with two RBIs, in a doubleheader against Norfolk State.
Tim Luth (NCAT) struck out five and gave up just two runs in seven innings in a win over Bethune-Cookman.
Myles Sowell (NCAT) was 6-for-9 at the plate in a three-game series win over Bethune-Cookman.
Jordan Varela-Payne (NCCU) went 3-for-6 with three RBIs in the series opener against Savannah State.
Stephen Baughan (NSU) hit a pair of home runs in a three-game sweep of Maryland Eastern Shore.
Trey Hanchey (NSU) picked up his first collegiate win against Maryland Eastern Shore, scattering five hits and one run in six innings.
Aaron Robinson (NSU) had six RBIs in a doubleheader sweep of Maryland Eastern Shore.
