NORFOLK, Va., March 26, 2018North Carolina Central senior Zach Michalski was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Player of the Week, the conference office announced today. Norfolk State’s Aaron Robinson and Maryland Eastern Shore’s Avery Tunnell earned Co-Rookie of the Week honors, while North Carolina Central senior Devin Sweet and Coppin State junior Jahmon Taylor were named Co-Pitchers of the Week.
 
Michalski (6-7, 270, Sr. Belews Creek, N.C.) had seven RBIs in five games this past week, while hitting .438 (7-for-16) and recording a .571 on-base percentage. He had a pair of two-hit games against Savannah State, including three RBIs and two doubles in the Eagles’ 10-2 win in the second game. On top of going the entire week without striking out, Michalski slugged a team-best .750 and had 37 putouts to just one error.
 
Robinson (5-11, 200, Fr., North Chesterfield, Va.) was 5-for-12 (.417) at the plate in a three-game series against Maryland Eastern Shore, scoring three times. He was a career-best 4-for-4 in the first game, falling a home run short of the cycle, and he slugged .667 for the series. Defensively, Robinson went error-free in 25 total putouts.
 
Tunnell (5-10, 160, Fr., Dover, Del.) was 5-for-14 (.357) at the plate over the course of five games, including a pair of two-hit efforts – one against North Carolina Central and another against Norfolk State. He had three RBIs for the week, including one that came on a walkoff single in the series finale against Norfolk State.
 
Sweet (5-10, 195, Sr., Greensboro, N.C.) threw North Carolina Central’s first nine-inning complete game since 2012, striking out a career-high 12 batters and giving up just four hits and one run in a win over Savannah State.
 
Taylor (6-0, 175, Jr., Altamonte Springs, Fla.) tossed a two-hit, complete-game shutout in a 2-0 win over Delaware State on Sunday, striking out a career-high nine batters in helping the Eagles complete the doubleheader sweep.
 
Other Top Performers
Caleb Duhay (CSU) went 3-for-5 with two RBIs in game one of a doubleheader against Delaware State, before swiping four bags in the second game.
 
Derek Lohr (CSU) had three hits and two RBIs in game one of a doubleheader sweep over Delaware State.
 
Jacky Miles, Jr. (FAMU) had five hits and four RBIs in a three-game series against North Florida, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs in the opener.
 
Dominic DeBlasie (MDES) was 4-for-4 in the series opener against Norfolk State with an RBI and a run scored.
 
Toby Hoskins (MDES) struck out three in seven innings of work against Norfolk State.
 
Josh Bottenfield (NCAT) gave up one hit in a combined 4.0 innings of relief work this past week.
 
A.J. Hunt (NCAT) had a pair of two-hit games against Bethune-Cookman, hitting two home runs over the course of the three games.
 
Jordan Varela-Payne (NCCU) had two multi-hit games this past week, including a 2-for-4, two-RBI effort against Maryland Eastern Shore.
 
Justin Burrell (NSU) had a pair of multi-hit games against Maryland Eastern Shore, driving in a pair of runs and scoring three times.
 
Jonathan Mahoney (NSU) threw his second straight complete game, striking out four in seven innings against Maryland Eastern Shore.
