MEAC Announces Weekly Baseball Honors

NORFOLK, Va., March 19, 2018Florida A&M senior Brian Davis and Norfolk State sophomore Stephen Baughan were selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Co-Players of the Week, the conference office announced today. Norfolk State’s Aaron Robinson earned Rookie of the Week honors, while North Carolina A&T State senior Josh Stikeleather and Maryland Eastern Shore senior Evan Bertone were named Co-Pitchers of the Week.
 
Davis (5-11, 220, Sr., Pensacola, Fla.) hit .500 (7-for-14) to help the Rattlers go 3-1 this past weekend, including a series win over Savannah State in conference play. Davis had five RBIs for the week, while also scoring five runs, hitting a double and a home run. Davis had three multi-hit games, going 2-for-3 with an RBI double against Alabama State, and his three-run home run in the second game against Savannah State secured a doubleheader split.
 
Baughan (6-3, 240, So., Richmond, Va.) drove in a career-high five runs on Sunday, hitting one of the Spartans’ three home runs in securing a series sweep of Northern Division preseason favorite Delaware State. He hit .429 (6-for-14) for the week and had six RBIs, while also hitting a pair of doubles. He went 3-for-4 in the series finale against the Hornets, including a double.
 
Robinson (5-11, 200, Fr., North Chesterfield, Va.) drove in five runs in a three-game sweep of Delaware State this past weekend, going 6-for-12 (.500) at the plate. He had multiple hits in all three games, including a double in the series opener and a home run, the first of his collegiate career, in the finale. For the series, Robinson slugged .833 and scored four runs.
 
Stikeleather (6-2, 175, Sr., Kenly, N.C.) picked up the save, his second of the season, against Presbyterian, tossing a hitless ninth inning. He followed that up with 3.2 scoreless innings of relief on Friday against St. Bonaventure, an outing in which he struck out seven and didn’t allow a hit before picking up the win.
 
Bertone (6-2, 190, Sr., Douglas, Mass.) tossed a complete-game shutout against Coppin State on Saturday, scattering four hits and striking out four as the Hawks secured the doubleheader split with a 1-0 win. It was Bertone’s first complete game for the Hawks, and the first for Maryland Eastern Shore since 2015.

Zach Spivey (B-CU) hit two home runs in a 5-4 win over North Carolina Central.
 
Derek Lohr (CSU) had three RBIs for the week and went 4-for-4 with two runs scored in the series opener against Maryland Eastern Shore.
 
Branden Redfern (CSU) struck out four and allowed just two runs in a series-opening win over Maryland Eastern Shore.
 
Corey Treyes (CSU) drove in six and scored three times in five games this past week, while also picking up the win in relief in Sunday’s 5-4 extra-inning win over Maryland Eastern Shore.
 
Joey Nicastro (MDES) went 3-for-4 in the series opener against Coppin State, his first three-hit game of the season, and had the game-winning RBI in the second game of the twinbill.
 
Ethan Chavis (NCAT) went six innings against North Carolina, striking out three and giving up just one run on four hits.
 
Greg White (NCAT) scored six runs in five games, including four in a non-conference series win over St. Bonaventure.
 
Corey Joyce (NCCU) had three multi-hit games, driving in a pair of runs in the second game of a doubleheader sweep of Bethune-Cookman.
 
Justice Sampson (NCCU) picked up a seven-out save against Bethune-Cookman, striking out a pair and giving up just one hit in 2.1 innings.
 
Austin Vernon (NCCU) struck out four in 1.2 innings of scoreless relief against Davidson.
 
Chase Anderson (NSU) struck out six and gave up just one earned run in a win over Delaware State.
