NORFOLK, Va., March 12, 2018Norfolk State redshirt junior Justin Hayes was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Player of the Week, the conference office announced today. Teammate Alsander Womack earned Rookie of the Week honors, while Norfolk State junior Chase Anderson was named Pitcher of the Week.
 
Hayes (5-8, 150, r-Jr., Chesapeake, Va.) batted .571 (12-for-21) for the week, while also slugging .667 and boasting a .640 on-base percentage. The Old Dominion transfer had four multi-hit games for the week, including back-to-back 3-for-5 games against VCU and Lehigh. He also hit two doubles for the week, while also stealing a base against Lehigh. In Saturday’s doubleheader sweep of Lehigh, Hayes reached base a combined seven times.
 
Womack (5-9, 225, Fr., Waxhaw, N.C.) went a combined 10-for-25 (.400) at the plate for the week and racked up three multi-hit games. After going 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a double against VCU, Womack had a pair of two-hit games and two RBIs in a four-game set against Lehigh over the weekend.  Womack hit a triple in the finale against Lehigh, and he also stole two bases for the week.
 
Anderson (5-9, 160, Jr., Norfolk, Va.) threw six no-hit innings in Saturday’s 7-3 win over Lehigh, the Spartans’ first win of the season, before ultimately tossing seven frames, giving up just three hits and striking out five.
 
Other Top Performers
Chase DeBonis (B-CU) went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two doubles in a win over North Florida.
 
Jahmon Taylor (CSU) struck out nine batters in 4.2 innings pitched against Fordham.
 
John Weglarz (DSU) was a combined 6-for-16 (.375) at the plate in five games this past week with two RBIs.
 
Chandellor Benton (FAMU) struck out five batters in 5.0 innings against Bethune-Cookman.
 
Dallas Oliver (FAMU) hit .364 in five games with four RBIs, including a 3-for-5 effort with two runs scored and an RBI against Florida Gulf Coast.
 
Tyler Friis (MDES) had three RBIs in a four-game series against NJIT.
 
Chris Melrath (MDES) struck out four in five innings in Sunday’s finale against NJIT.
 
Marcello Betances (NCAT) struck out nine in six innings against North Carolina Central.
 
AJ Hunt (NCAT) went 3-for-4 against South Carolina, with a double, before going 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI in a win over North Carolina Central.
 
Chris Kernen (NCCU) had six strikeouts in three relief appearances, picking up a win against Presbyterian and a save against North Carolina A&T State.
