NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State Director of Athletics Marty L. Miller will receive the Bud Metheny Award at Old Dominion University's annual baseball banquet next month.
The award is given to an individual who has made significant contributions to the game of baseball in Hampton Roads. This year will mark the 42
nd time that the award has been given out.
Miller spent more than 30 seasons as the head coach of the Norfolk State baseball team from 1973 until early in the 2005 season. He finished with a 718-543-3 record and won 17 CIAA championships. He was named CIAA Coach of the Year 15 times while becoming the winningest coach in CIAA history.
He played at Norfolk State from 1965-68 and earned NCAA College Division All-American honors. Miller was twice named All-CIAA before entering the U.S. Army after graduation. He returned to the Spartans and was named assistant baseball coach in 1972 before taking over the head position in 1973.
Miller will be honored on Friday, Jan. 11, at ODU's 42
nd annual baseball banquet at the Sheraton Norfolk Waterside. The cocktail reception begins at 6 p.m. that night with dinner and presentations beginning at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $65 or $45 for groups of 20 or more and can be purchased through
ODU's baseball program.
Last year's recipient was former Norfolk State assistant coach Wiley Lee, who played at ODU and was the head coach at Great Bridge High School before joining the Spartans.
