MEAC Announces Weekly Baseball Honors

Maryland Eastern Shore junior Tyler Friis was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Player of the Week, the conference office announced today. North Carolina Central's Jake Raby earned Rookie of the Week honors, while Norfolk State senior Devin Hemmerich was named Pitcher of the Week.

Friis (5-8, 165, Jr., Appleton, Wisc.) was 10-for-20 (.500) at the plate this past week, and he was a combined 6-for-10 in a doubleheader sweep over Coppin State. Friis had four RBIs and seven runs scored for the week, hitting three doubles and a triple – all while drawing three walks, stealing a base and going error-free in 11 putouts on defense. He was 4-for-4 in the second game against Coppin State, hitting two doubles.

Raby (6-2, 220, Fr., Granite Falls, N.C.) led his team with five RBIs this past week, while also batting .375 (6-for-16). He drove in three of those runs in a series win over Savannah State – including a 3-for-4 effort in the finale. He drove in two runs against Norfolk State earlier in the week, before also driving in a pair in the series opener against the Tigers. For the week, Raby had a .450 on-base percentage and slugged .500.

Hemmerich (6-1, 190, Sr., Norfolk, Va.) came within a strike of a no-hitter against Delaware State before settling for a one-hit, complete-game shutout. It was his second shutout and MEAC-best sixth complete game of the season, and Hemmerich picked up his eighth straight win in tying Norfolk State's record for career wins. Hemmerich struck out five batters in the victory.
