Delaware State senior Kwestin Smith was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Player of the Week, the conference office announced today. Delaware State’s Jared Gillis earned Rookie of the Week honors, while Norfolk State senior Devin Hemmerich was named Pitcher of the Week.
Smith (5-8, 170 Sr., Teaneck, N.J.) hit a combined .545 (6-for-11) for the week, scoring five runs and racking up three RBIs as the Hornets went 4-0 on the week. Smith was 3-for-5 with a double, five runs scored and two RBIs in the second game of a three-game sweep over Maryland Eastern Shore, and he was also 2-for-2 with an RBI in the third game of the series. He also walked eight times.
Gillis (6-1, 185, Fr., Middletown, Del.) had eight hits in 14 at-bats (.571) for the week, scoring four runs and driving in five more. He had three multi-hit games, including a 3-for-3 effort with two runs scored and an RBI in the series finale against Maryland Eastern Shore. He had two hits each in the first two games of that series, driving in a run in each game. Earlier in the week, Gillis drove in a pair of runs against Fairleigh Dickinson.
Hemmerich (6-1, 190, Sr., Norfolk, Va.) broke Norfolk State’s single-season strikeout record when he fanned a career high-tying 13 batters in a win over Coppin State. He went the distance for his fifth complete game of the season, which leads the MEAC and is the second-most in all of Division I. He only gave up four hits – none after the third inning. Hemmerich won his seventh straight decision, recording double-digit strikeouts for the fifth time in six starts.

Tyler Norris (B-CU) threw 5.1 shutout innings, giving up just three hits, in a win over North Carolina Central.
Nate Sterijevski (B-CU) had four hits in nine at-bats, including a double in a 2-for-4 effort against North Carolina Central.
Ryan Anderson (FAMU) gave up just one earned run in 8.0 innings pitched against Savannah State.
Octavien Moyer (FAMU) had a .571 on-base percentage in four games last week, reaching base safely in every contest.
Dallas Oliver (FAMU) was a combined 9-for-17 (.529) at the plate for the week, driving in three runs.
Isaiah Chambers (MDES) hit safely in all four of his team’s games last week, and he had two RBIs in the second game against Delaware State.
Wesley Martin (MDES) struck out four in 5.1 innings of work, scattering five hits and giving up just one earned run against Delaware State.
Nick Caregnato (NCCU) struck out seven in 5.0 innings pitched in a loss to Campbell.
Corey Joyce (NCCU) was 3-for-4 with an RBI against Campbell and hit safely in all four games played last week.
Carter Williams (NCCU) had a pair of two-hit games against Duke and Bethune-Cookman, hitting his first career home run against the Wildcats.
Ismael Herrera (NSU) was 3-for-4 with two RBIs against North Carolina A&T State, before going 2-for-4 with two RBIs in the second game against Coppin State.
Stephen Baughan (NSU) went 4-for-5 with three RBIs against North Carolina A&T State.
