Norfolk State junior Alex Mauricio was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Player of the Week, the conference office announced today. Bethune-Cookman’s Anthony Maldonado and Norfolk State’s Adam Collins earned Co-Rookie of the Week honors, while Bethune-Cookman junior Tyler Norris was named Pitcher of the Week.
Mauricio (2B/P, 6-1, Jr., Midlothian, Va.) was key in Norfolk State’s three-game sweep of Villanova – marking the program’s first-ever sweep of a Big East school. He was 5-for-7 at the plate (.714) with two doubles and a pair of RBIs, while also boasting a .777 on-base percentage. On Friday, Mauricio made his first collegiate start on the mound, going six shutout innings and striking out nine to earn the win.
Maldonado (P, 6-4, Fr., West Palm Beach, Fla.) went 5.1 innings in his first collegiate start against Boston College, striking out 10 of the 19 batters he faced and scattering four hits. He did not give up a run in helping the Wildcats sweep their ACC foe, picking up his first win.
Collins (SS, 6-0, Fr., Glen Allen, Va.) hit .462 (6-for-13) in the Spartans’ three-game set against Villanova, recording six RBIs – two in each game – and scoring three times on his own. He had two doubles and stole three bases – one in each game of the series. He had three hits in four at-bats in Saturday’s game.
Norris (P, 6-1, Jr., Coral Springs, Fla.) got the start in Bethune-Cookman’s season opener against Boston College, going six innings and striking out a career-high 11 batters. Though he did not factor in the decision, the Preseason Pitcher of the Year gave up just two hits and held the Eagles scoreless.

Jameel Edney (B-CU) hit .600 (6-for-10) in the Wildcats’ three-game sweep of Boston College, scoring twice and hitting two doubles and a triple.
Nazier McIlwain (CSU) had four hits in 11 at-bats in the Eagles’ three-game set at USC this past weekend, including a double on Saturday.
Corey Treyes (CSU) pitched 3.1 innings of relief against USC, striking out four.
Darnel Maisonet (DSU) had seven hits in 10 at-bats in a three-game series at Charleston Southern, including three in Sunday’s finale. He scored five times in the series, including four in Friday’s opener.
Aubrey McCray (FAMU) hit .583 (7-for-12) in a three-game set against Wofford, in which the Rattlers won two games. He drove in four runs in Friday’s 17-4 season-opening win, before recording three hits on Saturday.
Greg White (NCAT) hit .400 (4-for-10) in three games this past weekend, scoring three times and driving in a run in Sunday’s game against Western Carolina.
Corey Joyce (NCCU) hit two home runs on Saturday, helping the Eagles sweep a doubleheader over Navy.
Conrad Kovalcik (NCCU) was 3-for-6 at the plate in a three-game set against Navy, driving in five runs and scoring three times.
Justice Sampson (NCCU) went 2.1 innings in relief without giving up a hit or walk, recording two strikeouts.
Turner Davis (SSU) hit .500 in the series against Fairleigh Dickinson, driving in three runs – including two in Sunday’s finale when he went 3-for-3 at the plate.
Bryce Luken (SSU) helped Savannah State sweep a three-game set against Fairleigh Dickinson, going 6-for-9 at the plate in the series and drawing four walks.
Paul Sheffield (SSU) picked up two saves for the Tigers, striking out three of four innings pitched.
