NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State University left handed pitcher Devin Hemmerich was selected Tuesday to participate in the Coastal Plain League All-Star Game, to be held next Monday at J.P. Riddle Stadium in Fayetteville, N.C.
Hemmerich is one of six members of the Hampton-based Peninsula Pilots selected to play in this year’s game. Hemmerich, who will be a rising senior in the fall, is 2-0 with a 0.84 ERA in six appearances for the Pilots, who are 21-8 and won the East Division first-half crown to qualify for the CPL playoffs next month. Hemmerich has allowed just two earned runs while striking out 17 in 21.1 innings pitched. He is in his second summer pitching for the Pilots, who play in one of the top wood-bat collegiate summer leagues in the country. Hemmerich went 5-4 with a 3.86 ERA and a team-high 84 strikeouts in 81.2 innings pitched as a junior for the Spartans this past spring.
Hemmerich is one of four Spartan pitchers playing this summer for the Pilots. Rising senior Robbie Hiser (1-1, 0.00 ERA, 16 strikeouts in 10.2 innings) and juniors Michael Parmentier (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 17 strikeouts in 9.2 innings pitched) and Alex Mauricio (2-1, 3.18 ERA, 9K in 11.1 innings) have all played key roles in helping the Pilots get off to a fast start.
Hemmerich is one of three NSU players who have earned an all-star selection in their respective summer leagues this summer. Rising junior outfielder Tony Leite and rising sophomore outfielder Terrence Pinkston were both selected to the Virginia Beach Collegiate Baseball League all-star game, which was ultimately canceled due to inclement weather. Both players suit up for the Sea Monsters in the inaugural season of the VBCBL. Leite is batting .329 with 13 RBI and nine steals and Pinkston is batting .294 with 10 RBI and eight steals in the first 21 games of their summer season.
