CSU's Andrew O'Dwyer Named MACL Most Valuable Player

NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State University baseball’s outfielder/pitcher Andrew O’Dwyer was named the Most Valuable Player of the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate League (MACL) while playing for the Berkley Bandits this summer.

“I would like to thank my parents for helping me with my baseball career and for supporting me in everything I do in the sport,” O’Dwyer said. “Being the league MVP is a very humbling accolade. I would have never accomplished this accolade without God, my parents, my coaches, and my teammates that were extremely supportive of me. It is truly an honor.”

O’Dwyer finished the summer with a .471 batting average, .568 on base percentage, with eight runs batted in and two stolen bases. On the mound he accumulated a 0.00 earned run average, surrendered no walks, fanned 11 hitters and picked up four saves.

“When you are recognized as a League MVP that is a huge honor,” Coppin State head coach Sherman Reed said. “Andrew continues to get the job done on the baseball field and he’s equally impressive as a student-athlete in the classroom. I know he looks forward to getting back to Coppin this fall to continue building on what was a highly successful freshman season.”

O’Dwyer, a product of Father Ryan High School (Tenn.), batted .226 (46-for-133) for Coppin State last season with six doubles, one triple, one home run, 17 RBI, 30 runs and four stolen bases.

“This summer experience has prepared me for life beyond baseball because of the strong ethics and morals the coaches presented to us on a daily basis,” said O’Dwyer. “They really reached out to us on how to be gentleman and how to treat people outside the lines.”

O’Dwyer’s outstanding defensive play in center field was also a major factor in CSU’s 2016 MEAC Baseball Tournament run. The Eagles finished as one of the final four teams after eliminating a pair of teams in back-to-back games.
