Maryland Eastern Shore Outscores Hoyas in Doubleheader Split

BETHESDA, Md. — The Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team went into a Big East venue Tuesday evening and did more than hold their own. Over two games the Hawks outscored the Hoyas 14-11 in a split. Georgetown took the first game, 7-5, but the players from Princess Anne rebounded with a 9-4 win in the nightcap.

Maryland Eastern Shore improves to 13-27 on the year, but they have also won four of the last six and are 8-9 during the month of April. The win for the Hawks is also the first over the Hoyas since 1994.

The Hawks’ offense competed as one unit throughout the evening. Seven batters in the starting lineup collected hits in the first game and eight batters chipped in during the second. Junior Jordan Martin went 2-for-4 in the opener with a pair driven in, and senior Mike Escanilla went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI in the nightcap. Sophomores Jamison Trower and Isaiah Chambers tallied three RBI’s each during the doubleheader, as did Martin.

Senior J.P. Black moved from behind the plate in game one to the mound in game two and didn’t miss a beat. After getting a base hit and catching seven innings he pitched 6 1/3 innings to earn his second victory as a pitcher this year. Sophomore Jordan Turner earned his first save of his collegiate career with 2 2/3 scoreless innings.

The Hawks are battling Coppin State for the third and final spot out of the Northern Division for the MEAC Championships, and this weekend’s games will be pivotal to determine that spot. Maryland Eastern Shore will play host for the three-game set, which begins Saturday. Six seniors will be honored at 12:30 p.m. prior to first pitch.

Hernandez Pitches Bethune-Cookman Past Stetson

DELAND, Fla. – German Hernandez threw seven innings, allowing just two runs in one of his best starts of the season, as Bethune-Cookman defeated Stetson, 6-2 in non-conference baseball midweek action on Tuesday evening at Melching Field.

In just his second midweek start of the 2016 season, senior right-hander German Hernandez came up big for the Wildcats on Tuesday evening. After suffering a defeat at USF a week ago, the Cleburne, Texas native was nearly untouchable the second time out.

Junior Zach Olszewski collected his first save of the year, working 1.1 innings and failing to allow a hit.

The loss went to Stetson’s Jack Perkins, dropping his record at 1-2 on the year. He allowed five runs on six hits, two walks and a strikeout.

The B-CU offense was led by four Wildcats with two hits apiece. But none would be bigger than Josten Heron’s pair of two-run singles, giving him two hits and four RBIs on the night. Nathan Bond, Clay Middleton and Nate Sterijevski each went 2-for-4 at the dish, as the latter each tallied a RBI as well.

For the Hatters, the three hits produced was their lowest since May 2014. Conversely for Bethune-Cookman, with just three hits allowed, it matches a season-low for the Cats since allowing just three against Murray State (Feb. 13).

Bethune-Cookman gets back to the field Saturday, April 30, traveling to North Carolina A&T for a three-game Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) series in Greensboro, North Carolina. The series begins with a doubleheader on Saturday, followed by a single game on Sunday.
